So I’m taking Latin I just for kicks and we learn a lot about Roman mythology, it’s pretty sweet. So anyway the other day we read the story of Hercules. I always figured the story of Hercules was pretty straight forward:
“The dude is half God and is really strong… Spends his life killing monsters. The End.”
But what I didn’t know was that Hercules didn’t have to fight monsters and do all of that crap.
He chose a difficult life and one that would better serve man kind instead of him. He chose Virtue over Vice. His willingly served Eurystheus and performed the twelve labors. In the end he was reward for his service and was welcomed into the halls of Olympus.
Now after reading that, I immediately thought of Jesus. When He fasted in the desert for forty days the devil came to Him and tempted Him. This is very similar to how Vice tried to get Hercules to take the easy road. Christ knew he had a tough road ahead of him and still denounced Satan. Seriously there are some major similarities between the two.
For Example:
Father was God.
Mother was a human.
Loved by many
Could have chosen easy lives
Both were betrayed
Both betrayers hung themselves
Both died painful deaths
Both were rewarded with some form of Heaven and Immortality
Can you dig it?

It gives one pause, doesn't it?

Indeed. Jesus also bears a lot of similarity to the god Apollo. And a ton of other myths and the like.
