Lately, I've been hearing a lot of about the conflict concerning Kosovo's secession from Serbia causing all kinds of mayhem in the Balkans and I'm wondering what the problem is.
It's so hard to understand someone else's problem unless you are immersed in it yourself.
I'll try to recant the information as accurately as I can in order to make an assessment of the situation.
Apparently, Kosovo has gained independence from Serbia because of its large Albania population, since Albanians have been trying to gain much indepedence in the Balkans to begin with. The problem is that as ambitious as Kosovo want to be, its economy sucks. It has cardboard in its shoes, holes in its socks, and can't get a dollar from anyone. Several countries refuse to back it and it's suffering because of it. Serbia is even threatening to embargo trades.
So, the question is are the people of Kosovo right to want to become an indepedent nation among the other European countries or is Kosovo too weak and making a bad decision?
Either way, it seems that everyone is just watching it sit in squalor. AA members are more supportive for each other than the EU and UN is being to Kosovo. Why don't we as a global community at least work towards getting Kosovo a few loans from well-established countries, help build up its economy, and see if it will survive. If it looks like the ethnic Albanians can't come through in five or ten years, We can help Serbia absolve the region and help pull it back together.
We're just watching it slowly drown, don't you think?
