Why, oh why, was Paris Hilton's tumultuous return to prison such a BIG DEAL?
I saw it as the leading headline on AP, BBC, CNN, ABC, and the SF Chronicle at some point today; as of this writing it's still in the top 3 headlines. I read on a friend's blog earlier that CNN TV had a news chopper following the police car in which she was escorted to court.
This is just ridiculous. Since when has Paris' personal life been so much more important than the immigration bill failing, or The Sopranos ending, or the five-year old kid who was shot in Oakland today? I know she's getting a ton of publicity because she's Paris and because it's some case of Celebrity Justice or something, but since when does the media need to trivialize every second of her life, especially while foregoing some things that are actually happening around the world that might possibly (maybe?) be slightly more important or interesting or meaningful.
At least The Economist and Ensign don't seem to care. They may be the only media sources in whom I still have faith.
I'd link some articles, but I think you can see for yourself that there would be more links listed than words about how stupid everyone is for writing about Paris.
Paris, Paris, Paris!

It's quite disgusting how much publicity this is getting. We all (well the majority of us sane people) already know that Paris is an absolute moron. She's taking attention away from more important issues as you've stated, and she should really just suck it up and let the more important news stories get some of the spotlight.

Well, in a follow-up story, the SF Chronicle pointed out that Paris released statements imploring the media to pay attention to Iraq, etc., which is probably her publicist's genius idea to make Paris look better in light of the sheer volume of press (so people don't get sick of it) AND to get the heat off of her. Because then, the stories weren't about Paris screaming back to prison; they were about her asking the media to stop reporting about her.
Things seem to have calmed down, but it's still frustrating that it takes a good publicist just to get the media to pay attention to what else is going on.
