Stupid Topics

Okay, this is my first post. I thought I would try Progressive U out. Right now, I just want to talk about my government class. Our entire class has to debate a topic, which is voted on by the entire class. Then, once topics are chosen, everyone's names are drawn out of a cup, forcing them to take whatever viewpoint on whatever topic is up. For example, a name was drawn out for a pro for lowering the drinking age, and the most modest girl in school has to debate for lowering it, even though, if anything, she wants it raised. Unfortunately, she was one of the lucky ones. The topics were: Lowering the Drinking Age; Abortion; Smoking Ban; and the worst, Incestous Marriages.

I can see why the people for the topics were picked the way they were, but I think there should be a limit to the topics. My best friend was choosen to defend incestous marriages. She has absolutely nothing for it. We have been putting our heads together to figure out what to do, but we are still coming up with nothing. I would ask for discussion, ideas, or anything to help my friend. I'm okay for now: I have to go against abortion, and there are plenty of sites for that.

Atleast you'r friend didn't get beastiality. They should cite the royal family as a form of incest throught the ages, I mean they're kinds the most redneck of them all, they just have jewls<3 Tina

Individuals should be free to wed whoever they want. Keep in mind that such a union only means to the government a special sort of contract-- one where your property is split up in a certain way, where your right to see your children is established, and where the government gives you some tax benefits because you live in the same house. Why should the government forbid people from doing these simple things? No one is being harmed, and to the contrary, two people will really benefit. as with homosexual unions, the government should ignore all sorts of unions.

and concern for the children (who may develop with genetic defects because of the way traits exist in a family) should be passed off to the parents; the state should not care if individuals want to risk having an unhealthy child--the parents would be responsible for performing a DNA test or amniocentesis.

I have heard that in Alabama incestuous marriage is legal provided that there are certain guidelines met. For example, if neither side of the couple can bear children (being over the age of 65 I think?).

You might be able to do a search for the laws and how they are explained for that state. THere is also a researchable database (I can't remember the exact link, but it's called Opposing Viewpoints) that is filled with published scholar-reviewed papers on just about every debate topic possible. See if you can't find that one.

As far as topics for school, I don't agree that there should be a limit to them. It will really test your critical thinking skills if you are placed on a side of a topic you don't agree with. And making the topics less controversial will rob you of that.
