British twins have different skin color

A pair of British twin boys has been born with different skin color, a rare genetic occurrence according to experts.

In an interview with Britain's Sky News program, mother Kerry Richardson said that the boys were both born white but as they've gotten older one of the boys got darker and the other lighter.

Today, she says, the twins attract attention wherever they go.

Richardson is of mixed race, with Nigerian and English heritage, while the father is white.

A genetics expert at Oxford University says such births are rare, as the genes that cause skin color normally mix together. In this case, he says, it appears the genes for skin color didn't combine for some reason and the boys may have inherited different genetic codes from their mother.

Perosnally i think this is pretty cool and very intereting to read about and see.

I saw this too. There are 10 genes for skin color, usually they mix;however, the recessive trait came through. GMA had a lot of twins brought in with this trait. They brought up a good point one was white looking the other black. Both twins, same parents, but one could be segrated and the other not.

I think it is really cool how that can happen, but i also wonder how the two boys are taking it. I wonder how all of the attention is affecting them and if the darker twin is treated any less than the lighter twin.

my neice and nephew are not twins but they have different fathers, and one is very euro-caucasion and the other is african american, as you can imagine they look very different. my neice is a blonde haired green eyed pale straight haired twiggy little thing and my nephew is dark olive skinned with dark brown/green eyes and very curly brown ringlets (like justin timberlake) and everyone asked in shock to them "that is your brother?!" or "that is your sister?!" but nothing is really ever said past that, and as children they think its amusing. but we will see if things change once they get a little older, personally our family has used it to teach children we encounter that, hey we are all different colors in this family but we love each other the same. in fact my other sister has two sons, and they have an iranian/mexican mixed father so they look totally different too! these mixed families are so common now, its hard to say how the next generation will react (at least here in texas where i am)
