The End of Saddam Hussein

Saddam Hussein was sentenced to hang today after killing tens of thousands of Shiite Muslims. An Iraqi court sentenced him for crimes against humanity, closing a quarter-century-old chapter of violent suppression in this land of long memories, deep grudges and sectarian slaughter. Saddam Hussein's death penalty followed a celebration from the Shiites and Kurds, who had been tormented by Saddam Hussein. The trial was televised and Iraqis everywhere watched the televised trial. When Saddam was sentenced his death penalty, he shouted "God is great!" Saddam's six subordinates will also be hanged for the 1982 killings of 148 Shiites in a Shiite town.

While I won't miss him, I have to wonder if the hell everyone in Iraq is enduring now (and has endured since we arrived) is really worth this one man. He was a horrible man, no doubt. But thousands of innocent citizens have been wounded and killed since we arrived... can we really say we've made their lives any better? They traded the evil they knew for the evil they didn't and they didn't even have a say in the matter.

I totally agree that killing this one man will not do anything for anyone, except satisfy this dark and hating part of one's hearts. Even though Saddam Hussein did kill tens of thousands of people, I do think that he should have been given life in prison instead of an immediate hanging.
