The women that I recently read about, a practicing Muslim, distanced herself from the word "feminist" because of its origins in Western cultural bogwash. Advocating for women's rights in the Islamic world, she argues that feminism brings cultural differences that can only be attributed to the Western ideology of women's rights.
Her fundamental rights are Muslim, first, and then woman[defeats the purpose, won't you say?]
Of course, her argument lies in the rooted belief that the conservative nations of the Islam in the Middle-East would rather see a women with her hijab fighting for other women; there's no sense in a skin and bones woman who's blonde and blue eyed and in pants defending the woman who we can't even see, right? She's a heathen.[That's an over generalization, but that's the point they make]
The point of the degrees of feminism in her mind is that she is a Muslim, and only as a Muslim she will fight for women's rights in the context of Islam[as in, within the rules of Islam as interpreted by the Sheikhs] In this way, it will not be just a theological war, but a war of subordinates. A war between the interpreters of Islam. Because of Islam's strict interpretations of Islam, she argues, women's rights have been taken away. However, if those intepretations are slightly modified, women may be able to get half of the estate of their husbands once they've been divorced.
A happy day.

From what I understand, the Q'uran gives women many rights, like education, the right to hold property, and social and political recognition.
I wonder if this is anything like western christians and the 'God Hates Gays' beliefs.

You said in your post that, "Her fundamental rights are Muslim, first, and then woman[defeats the purpose, won't you say?]" I don't think that it defeats the purpose. Islam does not funamentally take away a woman's rights. Certain things have happened over the years in Islamic countries to make it seem that way, but it is not necessarilly true. And i can see the point of the Muslim chick. It means more to Muslim countries that a Muslim woman is fighting for the rights of Muslim women than it does for a completely radical woman to fight for them. It shows them that women don't have to be radical to own their own land, get educations, and hold jobs. It shows them that they have nothing to fear in liberating women.
This is the fault of feminism not this woman.
They look at western feminists and see sex crazed, degenerates who hate men, the family & their own civilization.
Woman who cant & don’t speak up against ski high illegitimacy, divorce, pornography & a sex soaked culture that treats woman as sex objects.
No wonder Islamic woman fighting for legitimate interests don’t want to be associated with feminism.
Hell, most western woman don’t want to be...
