Logical Debates in Comparison with Useless word Bile

DrifterDani6886's picture

Many of us debate on this site quite frequently, and also in “real” life with family/friends. You must be smart when you debate instead of coming back with some ignorant reply. I have seen this so much here and in my life that it makes me laugh some what. I was very surprised that on a blog I commented on someone didn’t shoot back with an ignorant response. They responded intelligently and didn’t break down my opinion.

Opinions are great, but they are not facts of course. By coming back with your weak opinion or breaking down someone else’s opinion you are only making yourself look like a total idiot. This coming from a blunt and honest person as most of you know.

To elaborate on this I will give some great examples to further help some people out. Smoking for example is bad for your health this is true. When you respond to a comment about how someone likes to smoke with a fact you might as well write an “I’m stupid” sign on your head. People who smoke know that smoking is bad, but they like it and that is their preference. Saying “People who smoke are nasty dirty people.” is an opinion but is also disrespectful and once again makes yourself look stupid. A more logical approach would be “I don’t agree with smoking and I don’t smoke but have your ever considered quitting?” or something along those lines.

Another one is the gay argument. People will say being gay is wrong, but not state why they believe it is wrong. Another thing they may do is say “girls have vaginas so guys can put their junk in them.” ”We were not created to like the same sex.” This is not only offensive, but rather ignorant. One reason is vaginas really aren’t solely for the male species they serve a wide variety of purposes. I saw a comment that was appropriate “ I don’t believe in people being gay, but your blog was well written and I agree on your points etc etc.”

When you don’t agree with someone it is fine to question them about their belief’s and opinions, but in a way that isn’t offensive. By saying someone’s opinion is entirely wrong is ignorant as well unless there is factual evidence to support your claim. You can challenge someone’s opinion with out changing their opinion and keeping yours as well. This can also provide new insight for both parties.

Another example is the God argument. People love to challenge this and get very bile about this subject. If you state “You are all going to hell if you don’t repent.” you are generalizing everyone. This is an attack if I must say so (Also a writing fallacy). “In my opinion I believe if people don’t repent they are going to hell.” This is a better way of stating it. Again if you want to go by logic this is not true for many people since our beliefs vary widely. To respond stating “You are an idiot who told you that? that is the most stupidest thing I have heard.” This is also an attack.

It depends how you word your comments. Think rationally. Don’t tell someone that their opinion is stupid, or breakdown their opinion in a rude idiotic way. State your opinion and tell them why you believe they are wrong. This is logical debating. Most the time I will try to find a common ground. I will tell the person things I agree with them on and things I don’t. This way it doesn’t come off as much as an attack like: “Are you really that stupid?” Be logical we have enough ignorant people in this world already.

I'm sorry to say I actually believed this for a second! Oy...and I skipped right over "right" because I've seen so much bad spelling from people who get testy at other bloggers! I should have known this was sarcasm--heck, I'm a master at sarcasm. Usually. Most of the time.

Oh my gosh do I know what you mean. As a debater myself I hate illogical arguments, they don't work in rounds with inexperience judges, so why should they work here with people that debate all the time? If people used some of the "arguments" they do here in my competitions I'd be set...lol. My opinion, yes it's an opinion, is that if you're going to say something to tear someone down, especially something controversial, be ready to back it up with facts. If there's one thing I learned after 3 years of debate it's be able to factually back yourself up or no one will buy your crap. And I agree Dani if you're going to state an opinion at least sound educated about it.

THANK YOU!!! what really sucks though is that I've seen and been part of many debates where facts mean nothing and that's a hard spot to be in. It's like I can prove to you a million and one times that 2 plus 2 is four but I lose because the opponent says he doesn't believe in the fundamentals of math or some shit like that. I honestly once was in a round where someone said killing innocent people is okay if it's done in small numbers. I was like, "So if I killed 1 person as opposed to 10 it would be alright?" They actually said yes. Come on people.

I would have tested your oponents beliefs by killing him... Wait the law is the law no matter what I believe for this exact reason and so I guess even moronic idiots get to live.

Haha yeah the sucky thing is that we actually lost that round, but I don't feel too bad because later in that tournament the judge got into trouble for playing favorites for teams he knew. we had another team tell us that because we supported pursuing military options against Iran that we were saying that women and children there wanted to die.

I have no idea about debate teams, sounds like alot of fun...I suck at debate and I would end up laughing at the silly things people say. The crazier the arguement the better the results...ask anyone.
SOunds like you love it, stick with it, it could pay off.

yeah see in actual competitive debate, crazy arguments like the ones Dani talks about here would rarely work. I've seen it happen enough.
It is something I love and I'm very passionate about it, I wasn't best in the school for no reason. And it has definitely paid off, I mean I'm going to compete on the second best speech team in the country next year, now that is where you hear some crazy arguments!

I wish our school would have had debate. We barely had enough people for a basketball team, so finding enough people to discuss topics in a logical manner would have been next to impossible. A lot of people at our school could have used some debate skills!

Your "I don't believe in the fundamentals of math" comment cracked me up! It lso reminded me of a book called "What the Dickens" by Gregory Maguire. It's about a colony of tooth fairies and how complete ignorance and intolerance of difference destroys the colony. One of their mantras is "Math is a Myth." It pretty funny. A kids' book, but worth a read.

Haha thanks, I was just kidding but good to know that someone liked it. I'll have to read that book. I sometimes think it really is a myth.

I love the "You're going to HELL!" comments. They usually come from users that aren't logged in, and I always wonder if they were searching for some anti-anything propoganda and just happened to stumble across a blog they hated.

Nice blog entry. I must say, I've made similar observations, like on one of ediblewoman's blogs where the comments have reached like 200 something (last time I was aware of it) because there was this back and forth argument about gay being wrong.

I was actually hinting to that entry. I know who was argueing with her but I won't mention any names. The arguement was funny and I stayed out of it.
