Texting while driving

Tagged:  •

We all know many states have banned talking on a cell phone while driving, however many may not know that some states are considering banning texting while driving. New Jersey, Washington, Arizona, and Connecticut, are all on board to ban texting while driving. The fines could be up to $250. They want to make this ban because of the accidents that happen. Studies show that driving and talking on a cell phone (even if it is hands free) is very dangerous, it cuts the brains activity in half, so the driver does not know what is happening around them. Now picture someone typing away on there cell phone while driving, its very scary. I am very guilty of both talking on the phone while driving, and texting while driving. However, I don't feel a ban should be put in place. I feel if everyone can stay focused on driving, and pull off to the side of the road to text, or talk, then there is nothing wrong with doing it while driving.

Your link didn't go through.

If everyone were responsible enough to pull off the side of the road before texting or talking, then we wouldn't be having a problem with them, would we? I don't think it's good to be texting while driving, since you're not even paying attention to the road. Talking a driving is a little different, cause your eyes can be on the road during that.

i don't know. I too am guilty of texting AND talking on my phone while driving but at the same time, i can do both just fine. And i know all kids say that, but i honestly can say I can. Also, when the law went into affect saying no talking and driving, people either said a) its not a first offense. ( meaning they can still do it but can't get pulled over for that alone. they have to be speeding, ran a red light etc....) Or b] throw the phone speaker and toss it in the cup holder. Now no texting? Simple way around that: Text with ur hand below the wheel.
I'm not saying its right, nor safe, but thinking like an 'opinionated stubborn American', that's what 'I' would do.

see, this is the problem. its the ignorance of people who think "they can handle both just fine". you can say that until you find yourself dead on the road or responsible for other deaths on the road. dont get me wrong, it took my share of mistakes and absolutely terrible driving to start thinking this way, and i too am guilty of texting while driving and talking on the phone while driving. but i dont carry the "i can handle it" mentality. being a teen driver, i KNOW i don't have the experience to be labeled as a good driver. but i do know that recognizing this and realizing the danger of driving every time i turn on the ignition will help me become a better driver.

There's a free service called Jott that allows you to call from your bluetooth (so, hands-free) and it will send a transcript of what you say as a text message. If you put it in your address book, you can use voice commands to call, record your message, and send your text without ever removing your hand from the wheel or your eyes from the road!

It should be banned! It seems that texting is way more dangerous than even talking on the phone and I think they both should be illegal. People need to pay attention. If we could do as you suggest, and pull over, we wouldn't have a problem. But people somehow think they are good enough drivers and texters that they would be able to dodge a deer (or a small child) in the road with their peripheral vision, because most of their attention is on their f***ing cell phones.
