Ok ProgressiveU.org, today im going to talk about marijuana. It is a drug used to treat cancer and also glaucoma, which is where the flow to your eye is cut off due to increased eye pressure. Now, this drug is used illegally across the United States of America. There is a lot of debate as to weather or not this drug should be legalized. Personally, I feel it should be legalized because it would make the laws job easier, not having to bust people every day, year after year. Everyone has there own opinion about this issue, and they also should have supporting ideas to back there decision, instead “it is, like cool and stuff.” Because that is not a sufficient answer. My supporting ideas is that it can be used as a form of pain killer, and it can also be used in more drug studies, now knowing that they can legally use it and distribute it. They could make an enormous breakthrough in medical science with marijuana. I also have personal, medical, experiences backing my opinion. In my state they do not allow marijuana for medical use, I know this because I have glaucoma. Because of it I have had two surgeries and extreme pain. I have also tried MANY medications, and all of them did not help me at all. I have many more surgeries to go. This is why I feel marijuana should be legalized.

I disagree, if they legalize marijuana, it should not be to make the law jobs easier. And way too many people abuse the medical marijuana to legalize it just like that. I think only licensed doctors should be able to give the patient the marijuana, and only in the doctors office so if the patient turns out to be a phoney, they wouldn't be able to redistribute it.

I don't think that marjauana should be legalized because pain ect. can be managed in other ways and it is very, very abused. I feel it is a daangerous drug and an "doorway" drug that leads to other drugs and should be illegal.
The doorway excuse has been used and abused. There are people who have smoked marijuana all their lives and never done another drug. Also, there are people who have never smoked marijuana and are addicted to cocaine or meth. There is not something magical in marijuana that plants the idea in a person’s head that they have to go out searching for more drugs. If you use the "gateway" reasoning, cigarettes could be considered a "gateway drug" because there are drug addicts that are also habitual smokers. It all depends on the person.
Marijuana should definitely be legalized. I think that it would cut down on a lot of crime because if the drug was legalized then the "drug dealer" would be cut out of the equation. Therefore, all the violence that is associated with drug deals gone wrong would be eliminated, at least where marijuana is concerned. Furthermore, it has proven, as you mentioned, to be very useful in treating certain medical conditions. I know that some people say that marijuana’s effects greatly out-weight the potential benefits it could provide a patient, but what is the difference in someone using marijuana or taking a pill that has like 10 different possible side-effects. I believe that one of the strongest hindrances of marijuana becoming legal is the ability of the government to tax. I think that if the government could find a suitable way to tax the drug that they would legalize it in a minute.

First of all, those of you who are saying that medical marijuana should not be legalized because it is a gateway drug or because it is “abused” need to have a little compassion, as marijuana can not only alleviate some pretty awful side effects from treatments like chemotherapy, but it can also help CURE certain diseases. Aside from that, marijuana is not addictive and the only harmful affect it has is the same as smoking, and if it’s used through a vaporizer, there are no negative effects at all. As far as it being a gateway drug, that argument is tarnished by the fact that once marijuana was legalized in several European countries, hard drug use went down tremendously. As for the argument of legalizing marijuana to give law enforcement a break, right idea, totally wrong reasoning.

i always thought they should legalize it and sell it like cigarettes with the same laws as alcohol. No driving with use, no selling to minors...etc. For the reasons already mentioned.
I think they should use it as a form of painkiller or actual prescription drugs, but there are idiots who are gonnna bend the law, get high & cause like a huge accident. (i know you know, what i'm talkin about). like here in hawaii, we have a HUGE ice problem. people buying simple pills like tylenol, just to make ice. & what makes it worse is now there is a law, that prevents a household from buying "X" amount of medicine a month. & imagine families with TONS of people, and they get sick?
if you think it about..... it's not fair to those who follow the law & those who break it.
legalizing marijuana would have to depend on whether people follow the law or not.

dont get me wrong a smoke weed, on a somewhat regulare basis. but i recently with the switch in my school semester i have a lot harder classes. i tried to do my math homework stoned wooo that was sooo not happening. dont get me wrong i write amazing papers stoned, but if weed was legalized i would never be straight and i would have absolutely no energy. plus, ive tried to cut down because it really affects my moods and thats no good. i dont really care whether its legalized or not, but it does have some side effects and its super bad for your lungs (like 200 x's worse than smoking cigarettes) and i dont know about the rest of you but everybody i know who smokes a lot of weed are really moody, prolly because all you want to do is smoke more weed.
