Article:
SAN FRANCISCO - City leaders approved a ban on plastic grocery bags after weeks of lobbying on both sides from environmentalists and a supermarket trade group. San Francisco would be the first U.S. city to adopt such a rule if Mayor Gavin Newsom signs the ban as expected.

Opinion:
I think that this great. I was thinking about plastic bags and the damage they do to the environment earlier today or this week. I hope this will set a precedent in other major cities and around the world.

So much more convenient than paper. *sadness*

Though this is great, the article does mention that stores may just offer paper. This would hurt the enviornment more than plastic bags do. One other solution they could have considered would have been a huge recyling project for the bags. I know I use plastic bags for everything from my small trash can to cat litter to lunch bags to temporary backpacks on trips. Our Target bags actually have printed on the side "10 ways to reuse plastic bags." I think that if we recycled more and reused more, it would be better than making stores choose between giving up profits and giving up plastic bags. which would you choose?

The companies are not going to go kapoot over changing from plastic to paper and paper can resused over and over again as well.

i rather lose money and help the environment, than gain money and kill the environment. We kill the environment we kill ourselves.

if we can recycle BOTH, why should we have to get rid of plastic bags in the first place? I'm just not sure I understand. O.o

i think on that simple fact the less we make of them the better the environment will be. yes both can be recycled but i rather recycle something that will decompose faster than something that will take half a century to decompose.

As a lowly bagger myself, I feel bad for those that work at grocery stores there because paper is a pain in the ass.

However, it is good to understand that measures are being taken to protect the environment...

I amazed at California's steadfast ability to set a precedent for the country. I hope other states follow this ban. Since both can be recycles as previously stated, paper is the better choice in my opinion. Also, this just gives other states incentive to set precedents in environmental policy in other areas. That is why the ban is important.
