Why I Don't Support the War in Iraq

We invaded a country. Yes, we invaded Iraq. Just like Germany invaded Poland and Belgium invaded the Congo. Iraq is not only a war, it's an invasion.

So why did we invade Iraq? Good question.  Iraq is a personal war with personal motives. Since America lacked evidence of WMDs, they fabricated them. Tampered, bribed documents from a fledging Italian intelligence agency are one of the only "sources" of information Saddam Hussein's supposed WMD program. The documents are heavily disputed and just today the Italian intelligence officer was fired due to the so-called reports.

Iraq is a country rich with oil. It has the possibility of become the next Saudi Arabia in regards to oil wealth. Prior to 9/11, the United States already had plans to invade Iraq, some of which surface as early as April 2001. The reason cited for invasion? Expanding America's access to Iraqi oil. 9/11 was the best thing that could've happened for Bush's Oil Campaign, as it gave him a 'reason' to invade Iraq that seemed valiant at the time. Even so, regardless of publicized motives, the truth is that Haliburton, a company formerly run by Vice President Dick Cheney, had already possessed rights to Iraqi oil! However, America had to take control of that oil before Haliburton can profit from it. Which is were the War in Iraq came from.

More than three thousand American troops have been killed since this invasion. Everyone hears that number and starts mourning. They raise their American flags and wear red, white and blue on July 4th. Yet no one cries for the estimated 70,000 Iraqi civilians killed (multiple estimates cite upwards of 100,000). People enlist in the military knowing that they could die. That doesn't make it right, but civilians don't sign up to die while walking to work, buying bread, or going to school.

As more and more information about Iraq surfaces, the war is becoming less and less popular. The war's support is down in the polls, as is faith in President Bush. Soldiers are coming home fatally wounded, many missing limbs. The Iraq War has cost American taxpayers billions of dollars and more than hree thousand sons and daughters. The real question is, when will it stop?

Let me just add that I fully support our troops, even though I don't support the war. I even belong to Hugs From Home, an organization that pairs a civilian with a soldier in Iraq to write letters, send care packages, and offer unconditional support.

Just a little side note.

I support our troops. I understand that what they are doing is simply their duty. They are forced to go to war. I do not support the decisions that are made by our government. We are a lousy excuse for a democracy.
