lol, I don't get it

I've been using the computer ever since 10th grade. I've learned many things but the most intriguing thing that I have to say is "lol". People make jokes in the internet and such while talking to their friends and they say "lol". Are they really laughing? I've had friends who are on vid conversation and they say lol but according to what I see, they didn't even laugh. So that makes me to wonder, why did you just "lol"? That also made me think of another thing. Are people saying "lol" for no reason? This has made me think, not that saying lol without a reason offending to me in any way. I also have noticed that I too have said lol just for smurking. I'm guessing that after a while, after typing "lol" for so many years, you are used to typng "lol" after someone says some joke even though you don' really find it that funny. The thing that I don't get is why do we do it. It's made me curious and if any of you have an answer, please speak up, all comments are welcome (Unfortunatly, even the negatives one). I want to hear of what you guys think about this.

P.S: Be truthful, if you lol for no reason too then don't be shy, I'm sure a lot of people have done it too.

I'm guilty of using "lol" when I usually only crack a smile. If I really find something humorous, I usually say "ha ha ."

I usually use "lol" to show that I at least recognized that the other person has told a joke even if I didn't find it funny.

I caught myself abusing the lol. So you know what I did? I stopped using it. Now I do stuff like this to be sure I get my reaction across:
-grin-
-laughs-
or, my favorite and the one that truly gets the most use
-insert hysterical laughter here-

But yeah, typing lol has become a habit, and has lost its power. Now you never know if someone really finds it funny.

And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.

i can't agree more, I am getting used to not using lol. I basically say haha in different forms listed below:

haha- ok, I laughed

hahahaha- I laughed even harder

hahahahaha!!!!- I'm having a hard not laughng right now.

lol is just used rarely.

lol always bothered me anyway, to be honest. I like to use full words...all the time...and honestly, I think it's better that way. You would not believe how much chat lingo like lol has found its way into my classmates' papers for school. XD

And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.

I'm guilty of using "lol" whenever I think something is funny. Rarely do I literally laugh out loud.

I can't agree more. It's unfortunate, in my opinion, but hey... [lol] =P

Using "lol" for some time has made it a habit that people can't really shake off. Maybe people do this because they can't express themselves any other way and the closest thing is to say "lol". Or maybe its curtiouos to say "lol" to peopel when do say peculiar things?

That is what I was thinking but now like I said before, I stopped using lol. I really don't mean that I am laughing, I guess it's just a way of saying that I am paying attention.

I always think about this. I NEVER use lol. I absolutely refuse, even if I am laughing out loud. If I am really laughing I will say I am cracking up or giggling etc. I always use haha to better get across my feelings towards whatever the person said.

Après la pluie le beau temps.

I guess I use it more for the person I'm talking to. I mean, if I'm kidding about something, how are they supposed to know I was kidding if we're not actually talking and they can't hear it in my voice?
Interpretation is different when reading. I could read the same sentence as someone else, but we could both get different meanings out of it. If I use "lol" it shows that I was being funny or something, just in case the other person reading it is too serious. I don't know, but all I know is that I hate using it and only use it so the other person could feel comfortable. lol (just kidding)
