I read something disturbing today. The U.S. senate proposed to split Iraq into territories according to religious and ethnic divisions. The Kurds, who pretty much run a virtually independent government within Iraq anyways, would receive the northern territories that they already govern. The Shiites and the Kurds would receive oil-rich territories. The Sunnis would get a territory that has few or no oil resources. The Sunnis , obviously, and the Shiites strongly disagree with the proposal. The Sunnis because they're getting the shaft and the Territorial Integrity Act of Iraq which they are in control of.
It disturbed me that it was the United States government that came up with this so-called solution. We have come so far for human rights. We ended slavery, had women's suffrage, and started upholding the constitution for all people. So why would we propose something that is so racist? I know it's not our country but then why have we been over there for so long? I thought we were fighting for universal truths and the rights of all people. On some level I thought we sought to bring the rights that Americans take for granted to the people of Iraq. The Iraqi government agree with me because parliament turned down the proposal saying that the Iraqis are eager for Iraq's unity.
Even though the United States is supposed to be the land of the free, the solution for Iraq is one that we turn to throughout history and even in modern day. It started when we formed this country and rounded up the American Indians and put them in territories. We put the Japanese in confinement camps during WWII. Even after 9/11 we questioned everyone of the Middle Eastern Decent and illegally bugged phone lines (among other crimes against humanity). It sickens me that we've been at war for 5 years for nothing. That proposal was defeatist talk from a nation who tries to portray itself as a role model. We can't figure out how to end the war so let's just give up, split the country we've been fighting for, and then leave. No harm , no foul, right? Wrong! We've created most of the chaos in that country and now we don't want to deal with it. I wonder if the soldiers who died in this war are rolling over in their graves knowing their deaths could have for nothing.
