What is Progress?

Well I am new to bloging and I have found this site rather interesting. I decided to read what the board members posted on Progressiveu.org. I have just come across the their blog about writing about what progress is. I think this is a great topic to discuss. I am going to list some things that I think define progress or a blog working towards progress.
I know this isn’t an essay so I’m not going to use a dictionary definition of progress. I am going to use my own. I think progress is working towards something to make it known, or to improve it. Progress is trying to make something better. Improving things. What type of things? This variety can vary from topics such as trying to convince others to look at something through a different perspective, to opening our own minds to things out there.

I think some progressive blogs out there discuss issues such as the hate against homosexuals, or issues which not a lot of people have heard of such as honor killings. As far as I know, the basis of this website is to make your voice heard. I am going to go into why blogs about homosexuality, abortions, serial killings, honor killings, the economy and politics are considered progressive.

The topic of homosexuality is not to defend or defy homosexuals. I think the main reason this topic is progressive is to open up the subject of differences. For instance, the blog would not be about being sympathetic to homosexuals or against what they are as in response to religion, but to look at homosexuality in a non-judging, clear-minded point of view. That is the best way to analyze anything. This topic brings up a lot of tension, because even if it has been around for years, people still don’t accept it entirely or relate to it. Progress with this blog would be to let people know the views of homosexuals and heterosexuals and everything they could possibly know about the issue before making a judgment.

The second topic I think would be progressive to discuss is the issue of abortion. This is a similar issue to homosexuality because it also seems to be in controversy with religion. I personally believe abortion is wrong, so in my blog I would discuss the reasons I think abortion is wrong and hopefully my progress would be to encourage others not to perform it.

As for serial killings, I am not very informed of this subject, however the reason I consider it progressive is because as people share their knowledge of statistics, crime rates, and general sense, others would be a step closer to safety. In my blog discussing this issue, I consider the death penalty as a solution. I am glad that people left comments as to inform me about the negative aspects of capital punishment such as racism. That helped me to refine my view, which I also consider progress.

A subject not very widely known, which is honor killings would make a great blog topic. This subject falls under my definition of progress because it is informing others about what else goes on in this world. Honor killings take place generally in the Middle East although instances have occurred in Britain. Basically, the men in the family are responsible for their women, which carry the family honor. If a female goes against the family honor by things such as refusing an arranged marriage, divorce, or adultery, the males in the family would kill her to regain the family honor. Hopefully with this blog alone, people will look this topic up. The more that people know the better as groups would form to change things.

The economy and politics would fit together as they go hand-in-hand. I think that these topics are progressive also because they inform people. I for one, am definitely not informed with what is going on with our government, or what our candidates are running for. That is part of the reason I don’t vote. If I am informed about the issue, my chances of voting would increase. If that is the cause for other youths, then don’t you think if they vote also, that is changing something? I definitely consider that progressive.

There are lots of topics out there that are progressive. Progressive because they are either informing people of important issues, or trying to improve issues. I hope I made my definition clear.

Abortion and the gay thing are generally considered dead topics around here. Do a search on either topic and you'll find roughly 10,394 posts on each. Now, I recognize that I post on the gay thing fairly often, but, I'm gay so it's kind of on my mind.

I don't quite understand what you are trying to say. Are you saying that abortion and gay blogs are not posted often? I don't know but I think they spring up alot of controversy because of the unaccepting society. That is why it would be progressive to write about these topics, weather they are popular or not. The more viewpoints the better. : )

No, sorry. I was saying they are posted way too often, which means that seldom does anyone post anything unique about them, and seldom does anyone change their mind on them. They tend to get a lot of comments, but they end in an impasse most of the time. I'm not saying you shouldn't blog about them...just saying you might want to read what's already out there first.
