The Fall 2006 Blogging for Progress Scholarship competition is off to a great start! Here are a few things to note, for those of you who were looking for more details (and for those who have done this before, but want to know what's different this time):
- The contest period for the fall runs from October 1 through December 4 -- only about two months. The five month contest period in the spring proved to be a bit long, and we wanted to shorten it this time. We think the ideal period is about 3-4 months, but we didn't want to hear complaints from instructors and professors about bleary-eyed bloggers who messed up on December finals due to too much blogging.
- Points accumulate based on posts, comments, reads, and bonus points during the contest period. We have updated the FAQ and Official Rules with details for the fall.
- If you have questions about the scholarships that you don't find answered in the FAQ, feel free to post your question on the Forum boards under the "Scholarship Questions" section. You can get to the forums via the link near the top left of the site -- just next to the "Home" button.
Happy Blogging!

I don't really know what this is about...but I'm just trying to give my best to attend a good college. I don't know which one I want to go to. Eastern Oregon because it's close, Southern Oregon because it's a nice college and I like it. Can you please help me and tell me what I'm supposed to do here?
Sylvia Huntington, OR
Swigley07,
I think a better place to post your question about colleges would be in the forums (there's a link to them in the upper left corner next to the "Home" link).
As far as what you're supposed to do here, I would suggest you start by reading as many blogs as you can, esspecially those by featured bloggers and/or individually featured on the front page. If you read a post that interests you, try to leave a comment. When you write your own posts try to choose topics that are important to you, and that have an impact beyond you and your family/friends

We can continue to scream ‘Racism’ all you want and debate it in blogs or elsewhere but one serious element for a real solution to the problem is sorely being missed. Tens of thousands of words are written about it every day in thousands of publications; your eyes and ears are bombarded by it via the Mass Media 24 hours a day all around the world. Mark my words when this ‘flap’ is all over and forgotten, ‘racism’ will still be there waiting to rear its ugly head again. You will probably only hear about again it if it dares to step on another ‘ big toe.’
There will never be a lasting solution against racism unless this same ‘Mass Media’ stops ignoring the ‘little toes’ that continue to suffer the same ‘true experiences of blatant racism’ at the hands of the UK and a multitude of other political entities internationally. Are not the ‘little toes’ just as important or are they still expected to still ‘eat it’ silently and keep their mouths shut? If my memory serves me correctly, it is the ‘little toes’ that are the supporting reason that the ‘Mass Media’ exists and has a business or an audience.
I’m not saying that the ‘Mass Media’ should go grab just any story and ‘blast away.’ But it would be a good start with the facts and documentation. They certainly shouldn't’ be ignoring them. I’m sure they can find many well-documented individual stories that are out there right now, both old and new. Many of them are so sensational, disgusting and unbelievable they would shock and dumbfound their reading, listening, and viewing public. Or, doesn’t the Mass Media think the public has the right to know about these people also?
Racism is alive and well. The ‘Mass Media’ may just be the unseen and unknowing contributing factor that continues to perpetuate it by this very ‘non-action.’ No story is too old or unworthy if these same incidents happen to these individuals repeatedly for the same reason time and again. The aforementioned consideration could have possibly prevented their reoccurrence and struck a real blow against racism all the way to the top of the ladder all around the world for the common folk. But then, the media still seems to turn a very selective ‘blind eye’ to this avenue even when it is offered to them with mind-boggling facts and documentation.
Let us stop berating each other and start making a real collective effort in solving this real problem, racism!
