"Why, you're the oddball! I can't believe you're still a virgin at 16!", they told me. In my 4th block dance (level 2) class, my group of friends that I talk to are all latinas. It's just shocking to me that out of the eight of us, only two of us are virgins, including myself. I'm fairly proad to be a virgin, but I've had people tell me that it's hard to believe I am because apparently if you're a latina who has an outgoing personality, it must mean you've had sex. Right? No, they're very, very, very, very wrong. I hate that people come up with assumptions of me like that because I'm latina. I am a very friendly person, but I don't have sex. One of my friends in my dance class had said that she lost her virginity at the shocking age of 13. She'd also said that she'd had sexual relations with eight different guys, and two of them are brothers. I shockingly replied with, "What?! His BROTHER??!", and my other friend replied with, "Of course--you have to sleep with their brother!!!", as if it's a universal rule that every girl knows, or is supposed to. I also hate the fact that I'm getting looked down upon by my peers because they all see that these (other) latina girls go out and do things like that with guys. They assume because most latina girls do that, that I must be one of them, but I don't. I take pride in being a virgin, and make sure that people know I'm not one of those girls. It's suprising to others, but I find it's all just ridiculous. If you can just give out something as precious as that, you mine as well just take a diamond ring that someone gave to you, and hand it to anyone because it's in comparison. Where a diamond is fairly expensive, you're virginity is priceless, and it's meant to be kept as long as possible. I also wonder if even one of those eight guys that my friend had slept with even remembers her name, or her eye color. It'd be suprising if they knew what her favorite color was, or anything about her, which's the most sad part of all. Other girls should take pride in their abstinence because I definately do. More girls should too.

There needs to be more girls who are savvy like you. Girls who just assume that having sex in middle school is normal will end up pressuring other girls into having sex before maturity as well.

Mind Control is Easier Than You Think
It may not be fair to you but human beings tend to generalize as a means for simplifying and understanding their world and it is generally called sterotyping. There is often a lot of truth behind sterotypes but of course since they are broad generalizations there are also plenty of exceptions. Some sterotypes are negative such as the one you are discussing in this blog and other stereotypes are positive.
The sterotype you are blogging about is supported by a lot of truth. For example in your dance class it seems that about 75% fit the mold. If one looks just a bit farther it is easy to find statistics that Hispanic girls lead the nation in teenage births and births to unwed mothers. They not only lead but they completely dominate these statistics. Those are not exactly proud accomplishments and all taxpayers will pay a price for that irresponsible behavior.
I think shame plays a corrective role in society and that people who are engaging in behaviors that are negative for society should experience a certain amount of scorn. They should be made to feel ashamed of their shameful behavior so that they will teach their children not to repeat it. I therefore really don't mind this sterotype. I am sorry that it negatively impacts you but I am sick of being taxed to pay for the poverty that inevitably results from their irresponsible behavior. Please heap some shame on your peers. This blog was a good start.
