Target vs Walmart

Beautifullyrescued's picture

These, generally, are the two stores that we go to when we want to go to one store to get an assortment of random things such as clothing, groceries, medicine.. ect ect ect. I however would choose Target over Walmart ANY day.
Why? Well lets see...
Everytime I go into Walmart it takes me at least 20 minutes to find the one item that i'm looking for, not because the store is so huge, but because its so disorganized. When looking for makeup removers it was next to the shampoo aisle, and band-aids were next to the bikes, (which to an extent makes sense to people who ride bikes, but to the rest of us, that is the last place I would look to find some simple every -day baindages.)

Another problem that continues to happen whenever I visit Walmart, is there's always a problem with communication between the workers. I asked a worker a question, they didn't know the answer right away, and I continued to walk to the other end of the store after i've already been referred to at least 3 other people before I can finally get a strait forward answer.
(A few friends of mine work there, and even they said they would rather work at Target but Walmart was quicker to hire.)

Target, I feel has better quality in just about everything. Their store is alot more organized, and everything is placed where it is easy to find. Usually if you ask a worker a question concerning where something is located, they can tell you without having to ask two or three other people where it is. I think they are much more creative in their advertising, in their product choices, and in their layouts. (They are also much much cleaner in apperance.)

Of course this blog is based off of my opinion alone, and you are more than welcome to disagree with me. I've just spent quite some time in the both of these "superstores" and I've found Target to be a much more pleasant place to shop.

Not only do I think Wal-Mart is disorganized, but I think its dirty in there (because the Wal-Mart near where I live is dirty and disorganized, inside).

Not every walmart is dirty. And I think walmart is THE best. I don't understand why people go on strike against Walmart. Walmart is AWESOME. It offers a HUGE variety of items-from foods, to clothes, to toys- for those who can't afford an expensive higher quality living. It also gives minority people a job. People who just came to America. They aren't biased or discriminative. They are helping people from immigrants to those who just want a good deal.

I'm torn.

Target donates HUGE sums of money to Planned Parenthood every year, which as a pro-lifer kind of makes me not want to spend money there.

On the other hand, Walmart gets way too much stuff from China and other countries, having abandoned their "Buy American!" theme from when Sam still ran the place.

Walmart, however, lets me carry, so I tend to go there.

Target donates not only to planned parenthood but to other organizations throughout the country and also they donate locally to the area around the store. In every neighborhood I've lived in the Target has had a program set up to donate money to local schools, and neighborhood projects. I've never seen this at a wal-mart and I used to live in a town where there were two of them fifteen minutes apart. I would think that if those types of programs were taking place then they would be quick to advertise them especially with all the heat that they've been taking recently.

Sure wal-mart is cheaper but overall the quality of items you're receiving may not be up to the same standard. I'm a poor college student I understand the need to save money but I've learned that buying items merely based on price doesn't always leave you satisfied pay the extra five dollars and get the blender from the reputable brand that doesn't break the next week.

I realize that it's a pretty biased argument but consider watching the documentary "Wal-mart the high cost of low prices". I know they guy who tried to start the union in the Loveland Colorado store and that is an accurate account of what happened.

Calling that a Documentary is no more accurate than calling Star Wars a documentary.

Unions are CONSTANTLY itching to get into Walmart, and yet walmart's employees constantly vote it down.

All of those "Walmart doesn't pay well!" "Walmart is a horrible place!" and "Walmart doesn't give benefits to single mothers with 20 children!" commercials are by the unions....

Why are the unions wanting to get into walmart? For the good of the worker? no. For the union dues.

I only mentioned that because I know the individual who tried to start the union in the Loveland Colorado store and I was trying to relay my personal information from him by saying just watch the movie. I mentioned that the argument was biased and it is I don't disagree with that. Do you work at walmart you sound as if you have personal experience?

I've worked many retail jobs, though not specifically at walmart.

I've known many who worked at walmart, both on the regular employee side, and also on the management side.

People are worth what they are willin to accept in pay. If one things that they make too little, they can search for a new job on their offhours. That's how it works.

It isn't the duty of the employer to give you super-high wages and big benefit packages as though they 'owe it' to you, the employee. They are offered as an incentive to work for them.

Typically, I prefer Walmart for a couple reasons. First of all, when I'm at my mom's house, it's the closest store, and it's still 5+ miles away. Secondly, they tend to have a much better selection, especially of clothes, than Target does. This is especially important for me because many of the 'stylish' clothes that Target has just don't fit my body type. And it's frustrating. I also love the fact that they have incredibly cheap movies (got like 9 movies the other night for under $50).

When I'm at school, though, Target is much closer, so by default, I go there. I like the design of Target better (it's not so white). But generally, that's not good enough of a reason to go out of my way to go to Target instead of Walmart.

I hate Wal-Mart and refuse to support it, but I'm also sick of fighting about it. Its trade practices at home and abroad are appalling, but most corporations are just that bad. Target generally gets better ratings from consumer and trade organizations, and treats its workers better. In the end, I think it's less about where we should go to get our cheap stuff but why we feel the need to consume so much in the first place.

i've known many target workers who were REALLY upset with how they were treated at target. More than walmart workers I've met.

however, Target doesn't have a national ad campaign from the Unions trying to smear its name.

Exactly. Consumerism - while it supports the betterment of the economy - is also a ruiner of self-sustainability. It is wise to evaluate what things you really need and what things you can really live without on a regular basis. (That is a good idea, self. Self, you should do this. I think I will, self.)

Amy I agree with you for the most part, but you cant find everything at Target and thats when Wal-Mart does come in handy...to be honest though I love Target besides it being alot cleaner its a more friendly environment. Wal-Mart hires whoever...Target does not. Target is my choice.

Have you ever head the "Walmart supports terrorism" theory? Apparently, Walmart gets its merchandise from China [& of course pays China for this merchandise] who then gives funds to Middle Eastern terrorist groups ... Go Target!

kariskoett's picture

They are both monopolies. If you think only Wal-Mart gets most of their stuff from China, check the products in Target - they're both guilty. Wal-Mart is just more successful at taking over small towns.
