Getting People to Care?

So I am proposing a project for Earth Day at my school... What I would like to have happen is to have four workshop periods, and an extended lunch period, to take up the whole day. Each workshop will be loosely centered around Earth Day, and planned/ run by a student. What I am hoping for is that workshops will come to include "Why Should I Recycle?" "A Day in the life of... (a foreign culture)" "My ecological footprint" "Current World Affairs" and other such globally minded issues.

I have presented this to the two main groups which I assumed would be interested... The Diversity Club, and Student Council... The two groups which generally always put on functions at my school, and which I am involved in. So far, people have shown interest in supporting the day, but not in actually lending a hand, and stepping up to the plate to help or run a workshop.

Although it sounds sad, this is the biggest problem with my school. People like things in theory, but when it comes to actually helping, and supporting them in constructive ways, they tend to just fade into the background. It is so frustrating. Perhaps people are like this everywhere? It seems as though all of the people in leadership-oriented areas are simply apathetic to what goes on around them. All talk, no action.

Am I the only one facing this frustration?

It's cool that you're aware with the environment and everything, but it's quite a task to muster of your school to do this kind of thing. And, you're right kids in my school are usually all talk as well. It's just normal human nature.

I don't think that it's because they're 'apathetic', more-so they don't know what they're getting out of it.
