Alright, so I was reading a blog about Schindler's list, and one of the threads was about present day anti-semitism, and why it still exists. A lot of people shared their stories about people disrespecting them for their religion, and a lot of people made some really horrible comments on the blog. Comments about how all Jews are bad because the killed Jesus, because they take Jesus out of schools and other places, because they are money hungry and greedy....I was actually kind of shocked.
After reading that, I was doing some research on the KKK and visited their website. I was surprised to learn it's not just African-Americans that they hate, but Jews as well. They basically blamed Jews for every single atrocity that has happened in the world, and said that the constitution regarding separation of church and state and freedom of religion applies only to different branches of Christianity, not to other religions. I had to wonder how people can be so ridiculous naive and narrow minded.
Now, I'm Catholic. I don't practice, and I'm not a big fan of most of its ideas, but I was raised Catholic. My best friend is conservative Jewish (not Hisidic). Her grandparents survived the Holocaust, her mother is Israeli, she has strong roots in her heritage, speaks fluent Hebrew, attends Hillel and is very spiritual. However, she is the most open minded, understanding person I have ever met. Generally we have debates about religion in my apartment, and in the past two years I've learned a lot about Judaism, and told her everything I could about Catholicism. But at the end of the day, it's not her religion that makes her a good friend. She is caring, supportive, the best listener, she's funny and ridiculous to hang out with. She cares about people, she's motivated, she has so many goals and does everything she can to reach them. She is not greedy, always willing to help. She is a great person. But some people only see her as a jew.
Christian views that Jews are bad make me embarassed to even claim my Christianity. I get so mad when people actually are egotistical enough to assume ONE religion has it all right. People constantly talk about the dangers of Islamic extremism. Well what about Christian extremism? What about the people like Fred Phelps and Billy Graham? People who are so burried in their religion that they are willing to deny legal rights to gays and to women? People who are so convinced their religion is the only true religion that they'd be willing to deny and discard every other religion from having a position and opportunities in America. People who protest military funerals in the name of God with signs like "God Hates Fags"? Why does no one realize that if people like this succeed, our nation will become a theocracy, and millions upon millions will have no voice simply because they don't believe a man was nailed to a cross. Where is the outrage?
At the end of the day, I ever really understand how people can get so wrapped up in religion. In my opinion, religion was developed for two specific reasons; in order to help people deal with the inevitability of death, and to help people teach morals. Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, they all have the same fundamentals; live a good life, go to heaven. Moral life, easy death. Are people that naive to believe that one specific religion is correct? Especially since Christianity is the most recent one? Compare the history of Baptists to the history of Jews.
I just don't get it. People are so wrapped up in the idea that there is only one right religion, one right God, when the holidays people celebrate and the buildings they pray in should have no basis on the opinion. Are they good people is the main question at the end of the day. Jews raise good families with strong family ties, and goals, they love their children and teach their children to be good, just like most Christians, just like most Muslims. Do you really think when someone's life is on the line, it matters if it's a Jew or a Christian doctor that will save you? Do you think that when your child's life is on the line and you take them to a hospital, you're going to question the doctor on whether or not they believe in Jesus Christ before you allow them to help your child? People are people. Sure there are races and religions, but everyone boils down to the same human race. No one is better than anyone else, no one's belief in Jesus or Allah or the Messiah are any more founded than anyone else's belief. Do you really think it's more plausible that a man walked on water, was the son of God and rose from the dead than candles burned for 8 nights, or that heaven is made of 70 virgins? There are bad Christians, bad Muslims, bad Jews. I just get annoyed because recently for some reason I've been seeing so many more examples of Christian prejudice against other religions.
I read an article about a preacher in Minnisota, where his congregation was bent on supporting the Republicans, supporting pro life advocates, supporting anti-gay politicians and supporting America and the war. When the preacher gave a sermon saying he didn't think religion and politics should mix, and that it wasn't the churches place to control the government, 1,000 of his 4,000 patrons left. One man was quoted as saying "Well, if we're the light of the world, why shouldn't we control it?". How arrogant can you be? You assume Jesus saved you so you can press your will onto others, so you can be in command and have rights over others? Religion shouldn't be used to enforce authority. I don't believe Jesus or Christianity belongs in a public school, just like I don't believe Judaism or Islam belong in a public school. I don't believe Christianity belongs in the court room, just like I don't believe Judaism or Islam belong in a courtroom. I don't believe Jesus or Christianity belong in Walmart, Abercrombie, Linens N Things, the Town Meat Market, or the stationary store, just like I don't believe other religions belong there. But for some reasons, Christians believe that for some reason, Jesus belongs everywhere regardless of whether or not Christians are there.
I've just gotten to a point where I worry that eventually, America will become amini theocracy. Look at Bush, he revolves most of his "family values" ideals around Christianity. He revolves his opinions on homosexual rights around Christian values. Well, what about the agnostic homosexuals? Their rights are overlooked because they don't believe in Jesus? It just seems so close minded.
I find it funny that Christians are so quick to claim that their religious ideas hold all the answers, they alone are right, but they always neglect to mention how many Christians exploit religion. Do you see Jews or Muslims on a TV channel, on stage saying "PRAISE-A MESSIAH, I MADE THIS MAN WALK-A, I SAID WALK-A" and then pass around a basket for money because the "pastor" performed a miracle by making an actor get up out of a wheel chair? Or how about Jews protesting outside military funerals because they hate gay people, and using religion as the excuse? Do Christians forget the countless number of priests who molest and rape little kids? Christianity is rought with scandles and lies, much like most religions. It is no more credible than any other religion. Yet for some reason, most Christians feel they have a leg up in the world, and deserve to be in control.
I don't get it. I was raised to believe in God and Jesus, and both of them, I do. I believe there is a God, and I believe Jesus existed. But that's not what is important in my life. I am more concerned about whether or not a person is a genuinly good person. A person with morals, with intelligence, with logic and reasoning. A person who understands that which they don't believe, a person who isopen minded to other things. A person who cares about others regardless of who they pray to. It just baffles me that other people's "requirements" when it comes to accepting others are based on such flimsy things. I believe more in the existance of good and bad, right and wrong, love and hate, than I do in the existance of a man who walked on water, or climbed a mountain to get some rules, or a woman who ended up pregnant without ever having sex. If there is a God, I think he'll understand my reasoning. I think he'd rather a person spend their life doing good and seeking equality, caring about people for who they are and how they act rather than spending my life telling other people they are wrong and going to hell in His name. God created everyone didn't he? Don't you think if he wanted everone to believe in the same religion, he'd make it so? Why would God create so many different religions if only one was right?
I don't know. I can only imagine the hate responses I'm going to get because of this, but it's been bugging me. While I know it will always exist, I am so sick of biggotry and racism. It's such a waste of time. There's so much in the world that is positive and worth living for, and people are wasting away just being assholes in the name of God. It seems ironic to me.

i'm probably the youngest commenter, so please excuse my inexperience....
but anyways, in my opinion, religion is just that. its every man's understanding of purpose. without purpose, life may seem meaningless to many. there always has been a search for the greater by man, whether it be aliens or angels or God. the funny thing is, most religions are meant to preserve life and lead it into a final utopia. so the idea of descriminating in the name of religion???? also, if there is a God, wouldn't that mean there is purpose? wouldn't purpose mean a REASON for the many diff. religions???
regarding the idea of no doctrine/ no God, that sounds really depressing. like i mentioned, people need a purpose for living, whether that be in the form of religion, thats up to the person. also, most hate stems from the misunderstood. sure there are a couple of truly 'evil' people around, those who have no concern for life and the right to live it. most discriminators though have no idea who their hating! do anti semites truly know jews and what they stand for? do they understand the talmud and torah, have they read its contents? ( i think i spelled it right) do they understand the diversity of a people who have survived as a group for over 3000 years holding on to their own culture? do anti christains understand the many groups within christianity, the ideas and beliefs. do they 'forget' about the good and many contributions from them? there are contributions from all religions, muslim christian jewish buddhist.... hate stems from the blatant refusal to accept these facts. i was on train were three jews walked on and recieved the shouts "hail hitler, Hail hitler!" why would any one say that? its because they dont really know of the atrocities performed at that time. sure the general idea, but the details??? you want a good society? then all people should truly educate themselves. do it cause they want it. do it because they know the world is diverse and no one people alone deserve the planet. an educated world without a couple of greedy extemists would mean an enlightened planet. is it also the fault of some brainwashed kid to hate people because "Allah said so"? i dont know, these are just some of the thoughts rushing through my head.... at least most people on this blog seem to be well educated.
Stefanie I just wanted to congratulate you on being a true humanitarian in writing this blog! The very fact that you are somewhat Catholic and have extended your hand to another more persecuted religion shows the inherent goodness in people!
Being half Jewish myself, on my mother's side, (which by the Jewish religion would make me a full Jew), has made me extremely sensitive to all the hate towards the Jewish people. I'm sick of hearing how ugly jews are or how manipulative and power hungry or greedy they are. The only reason I don't consider myself to be Jewish is because 1) I'm atheist or at best agnostic, and 2) I go to the Unitarian Universalist Church which is really the most open church that welcomes all faiths including atheists. In fact I think the minister maybe atheist herself! The UU welcomes gays, and even did a whole sermon on transgenders!
But having said all of that I would like to get passed religious ideology and religion period! Oy! It's caused enough hate, prejiduce, and wars. Enough already. The only thing I want to keep from religion is my partially Jewish, and Catholic roots. But other than that I would like for religion to wave bye bye and replace it with science. Ok I don't mind the communal aspects of religion and even some spiritual aspects. Humans are a spirtual animal too! But one of the biggest problems I see is the aging problem. If we could find a way to slow down or even reverse the human aging process than we would be living hundreds and hundreds or years longer, and there might not be a limit to how long we can live. I've done alot of research into this field of study called radical human life extension an subset of what is called Transhumanism, which is the idea that we should use applied sciences such as biotechnology and ultimately nanotechnology to allow people to live much much longer, become happier even exponentially and even become much smarter.
But most people are still stuck in the prmitive stages arguing about which religion is right according to some ficticious book of their choosing.
I've been raised Lutheran in a German-prominent society. So far as religion goes, I've been immersed in it from birth. I believe religion does fill a very important role in society but has been overstepping its intended boundaries, in my opinion, increasingly far too often.
In situations where religion is not the best tool for finding a solution, it should be avoided. I believe this includes situations where judgment is passed on individuals or groups based on biblical (Word of God, etc), and not societal-defined criteria, or where there is a set of available proven, scientifically-based methodology which offers a solution. If one resides in a society where Church and State are inherently designed to be separated, then leaders and members of organizations (outside of religious ones) have little business bringing the rules of religion in to play as governance.
I argue that religion is a tool to help people find solutions, such as finding meaning in life and a set of answers to the unanswerable. This belief should aid one in his or her individual development and can even provide a sense of community among a certain sect of individuals holding similar beliefs; however a single religion should never completely define either. There is too much power at stake with little to no room for any form of checks and balances, offering a great place for the incubation of "blind faith" manipulation and uncontrollable influence and centralized power allocation.
Stefanie, I've read your post and couldn't agree with you more. Noting that you've recorded this blog about 2 years ago, please let me know if you've made any headway with your dilemma! You're not alone; I've been tackling the issue as well and am interested in hearing your thoughts.
The End.

People hate the Jews because they represent morality.
Prejudice, it seems, is a standard fare of life.
In his folksong entitled "National Brotherhood Week," Tom Lehrer sings:
Oh the Protestants hate the Catholics,
and the Catholics hate the Protestants,
and the Hindus hate the Moslems
and everybody hates the Jews.
In this song Lehrer expresses a truism, that hatred for the Jew is uniquely commonplace. The question is: Why?
What lies behind these millennia of hatred?
Why has the undercurrent of anti-Semitism bubbled and boiled
and exploded against Jews everywhere, time and again throughout history?
The Answer:

There is no other way to explain the irrational hatred against them:

Stefanie,
I think you may be interested in learning about the Baha'i religion. My grandma has friends who are Baha'i and I've attended some of their meetings.
They believe that no religion is really the correct, all-encompassing religion, but, rather, that God has given different societies different belief structures based on what he believed they needed at the time they needed it the most. It's really fascinating stuff, and you seem like an open-minded individual. Of all the religions I've read about/been involved with, I have to say that Baha'i is the least exclusivist of them all.
I am currently dating a guy who is a french jew. I am christian which can sometimes be conflicting but for the most part they are NO different then anyone else. I don't see how any one religion can be blamed for one thing or another. I agree with your veiwpoint! Hatred is a form of ignorance!
Well under this roof of sky there is only one religion and that is humanity. I believe that religion only give you guide lines. Rest all is up to you. I also think that religion is also base of all problems. Without religion there are two group of people, Good and Bad. But with religion, good sometimes turn bad. Please stop this bloody islam, jew, christian stuff. Which religion religion tells you to kill other fellow beings. I dont believe in any religion now cause I am so sick of this. Please stop killing killing each other please...
Hatred of Jews goes back thousands of years, probably to the first person who called himself a Jew, Israeli, Hebrew, et al. Almost every culture has tried to wipe us out in some way or another; and all those cultures are long gone. Sumerians? Gone. Babylonians? Gone. Rome? Gone. Soviet Russia? Gone. Nazi Germany? Technically not gone, but it's been drowning since the end of WW2, and contemporary anti-semetism is the only thing that seems to keep it alive. Now, I'm not claiming there is a direct correlary between trying to wipe out the Jews and having your culture disappear, but there's a pretty strong historical argument for it -- especially if you're one of these bags-o-douche who think the Jews run everything.
A lot of the hatred comes from how closely knit our communities are. Until the 20th century, it was almost impossible to convert to Judaism. We didn't want other people joining our Chosen People club, and some sects of Judaism still don't. (Other sects, like the reform Jews, just want everyone to get along and stop fighting so we can all love god. Yeah, reform Jews are idealist liberals. Oh well. I wear that badge proudly.) So, we're exclusive, some might say elitist; some might say arrogant. Some might say we should all die because of it.
During the Black Plague years, Jews were feared and hated because they didn't get the plague as often. Two reasons for that: Jews were seperated from the Christian communities, and we had ritualized cleaning that the Christians back then didn't have (for whatever reason). Thusly, Jews were thought to be casting magic spells on the Christians making them sick. That sounds reasonable to a 6 year old. Throughout Christian history, Jews have been accused of casting magic spells on Christians upon numerous occasions. Let us not forget the murranos in Spain during the Inquisition who converted to Christianity, but were accused of Judeizing and were thusly burned.
And of course, contemporary anti-semetism is just about as logical as the "they're doing the magic on us, let's kill them after we recover from this plague" mentality of the pre-Enlightenment days (that is before 1735-ish CE). Contemporary anti-semetism says that everything in the world that's wrong is caused by the Jews, their greed, their control of the media (Rupert Murdoch: not a Jew); you know, general insanity.
Of course Jews control the banking system. Know why? Because in medieval Europe that's the only think Jews were allowed to do in Christian towns: we couldn't legally own land, or do any of the other jobs, and it was illegal for Christians to become bankers. That tradition continued, and does still (to a much lesser degree) because Jews are good at math. Just like Asians -- we're very similar like that. Oh wait, Jews don't control the banking system: rich people do. Not all Jews are rich; not all the rich are Jews.
I don't often play the long-comment game, but your question required a brief summation of history, and this was as short as I could make that with the little time I had.
I'm sorry, I take your comment completely seriously and I'm not trying to make light of the subject (which I feel is a good subject) but, I wanted to throw this in:
When you wrote "Rupert Murdoch: not a Jew," all I could think of was Adam Sandler's "Chaunakah Song" (please correct my spelling, I know it's atrocious). Maybe he should put that in his next version instead of OJ Simpson!
After that whole Mel Gibson thing I did some investigating, wondering what the heck was he talking about. He made no sense. What I uncovered is insane. I don't even understand it. There is this polital Jewish/Zionist political party. Some extremists are trying to blame them for school shootings like Columbine and othe tragic school shooting in Red Lake, MN. I don't get it but it think that would be a good blog idea, someone explaining this messed up conspiracy theory.
As far as Minnesota and religious Politics, I lived there at the time. The Catholic Church during the last Presidential election was telling its members that if they voted Democrat that they would be kicked out of the church. Even my own church started preaching politics, and as a result, I quit that church. It was an event that shook the faith of MANY sould and is backfiring on them, as memberships and offering are declining. Now I like in SD, so many people want the State in the church and the church in the state. I hate it because I live in a rural Community and I am the minority STRONGLY beleiving in the Separation Of Church And State.
Okay,

~~Your comments are valued. I understand what I say can create emotional responses, I hope that this helps every one to fine tune that emotional reaction into personal growth. (I need to work on that to, those emotions, they get me going every time!)
Wow, pretty intense response their ashley....i don't know how to contend your one liner of wit....I bet you feel real good contributing such a thought provoking sentence to this topic....thank you for really taking on the topic of this blog....you're sentence clears up everything.
..if you're going to insult, at least be original and explain why.
Ah, yes, the Jews were responsible for 9/11, that's why as the planes crashed the Jews piloting them screamed "PRAISE ALLAH"....secretly, the Jews call God Allah too.
And those 24 people arrested in England, also Jews. DUH! With names like Mohamed Mohamed Ibrihim, how could you not tell?
Islam will win the 3rd world war? There shouldn't be a third world war, and moreso it shouldn't be a battle of religion. If Muslims stopped being brainwashed to believe 70 virgins are waiting for them in heaven if they slam planes into buildings, maybe we' have less wars. Last I checked, the only people who think Jews cause any of these terrorist acts are conspiracy theorists who can barely defend their position and only say it in order to get the blame off their own culture.
The day Islam rules all over the world is the day I slit my wrists-of all the religions, I would want to be extremist Muslim first. As Carlos Mencia said, a bad day in America (or any democratic nation) beats a good day in Iran/Lebanon/Iraq anyday. I find it funny that Islamics bash other religions, but yet believe their God got on a magic flying horse and flew to heaven and back. Yes, way more believable than other religions. All religions are based on ideas that look as though people who were on acid thought them up. Islam, Christianity, Judaism...no one religion is better than another. Get over it.
wow talk about ignorance at it's max. MAGIC FLYING HORSE??! pleeeaaase. LOL, are you refering to greek mythology?
go learn about judaism and islam. and please don't go to silly wannabe-funny sites. cause you are mkaing yourself look like a fool.
No, I am not talking bout greke mythology.
Islamic religion believes that on a specific night (an Islamic holiday) Muhammad rode on a flying horse/pegasus to heaven and back.
Perhaps you should learn about them yourself?
And I'm full of shit? Why, because I believe that no religion is better than another and I believe Jews shouldn't be looked down upon as a culture because they of their religion? Ya, how incredibly shitty of me, I can't believe some people!
Make logical posts, not just insults.
Ah, I see.
Isra is Muhammad's (pbuh) night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem- specifically to Masjid al-Aqsa. Mir'aj is his ascension to heaven.
The Isra and Mi'raj however were not physical journeys but rather of the soul. Some Islamic scholars say it was a dream or a mode of revelation for the Prophet in symbolic form for the guidance of the Muslim nation.
And finally, Muhammad is not God. That is a very blasphemous statement, just as portraying Jesus(pbuh) in Islam as the Son of God or God Himself.
I'm sorry if I was harsh in my comments but I am Muslim and was angered at your statements. I apologize and I hope I dispelled any misunderstanding.
And as for the Jews, I respect them- they were revealed first that which the Christians and Muslims were revealed and share many of the same beliefs. You're not a shitty person. But your info on Islam is a bit contorted and consequently, offensive.
I'm in no way insulting Islam, or any religion, and I didn't mean to. My point of the original reply you replied to was to say that no one really has a right to say one religion is more "believable" or "possible" than another. I was actually more so taking a stab at Christianity since it's usually Christians who are in your face "I'm the chosen light of God" type of people, and it bothers me when some people have the audacity to believe one religion is more rooted than another. I believe every religion is plausible and is equally and believable as the next, and I can understand why Muslim's believe what they believe, why Jews believe what Jews believe, and what Christians believe what they believe-my point was that no religion has stronger "truth" than any other.
Clearly, I'm not a muslim, and my knowledge of Judaism and Islam isn't renound, I was simply drawing on the little knowledge I had to compare all three religions.
Didn't mean to insult, and I hope you understand what I was saying now.
I don't hate jews, I hate Zionists. Muslims embrace the Jewish Prophets and Jesus, while Zionists and "Christians" are so arrogant. There is only one god, and Jesus and Mohammed are his Messengers, Peace Be Upon them. Islam will win the 3rd World War. "Evidence linking these Israelis to 9/11 is classified. I cannot tell you about evidence that has been gathered. It's classified information." http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/spyring.html -- US official quoted in Carl Cameron's Fox News report on the Israeli spy ring and its connections to 9-11.
HMM....PEOPLE HATE JEWS BECAUSE THEY ARE MOTHER FUCKERING HYPOCRITES!!! THEY TELL THEIR CHILDREN NOT TO HATE ON OTHER RELIGONS AND THERE THEY GO DOING IT BECAUSE SOME GROUP DID SOMETHING TO PISS THEM OFF. IF YOUR GOING TO SAY SOMETHING STICK BY IT! DON'T TAKE IT BACK 'CAUSE SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE CALLED YOU A PUSSY OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THE HATERS DON'T REALIZED THAT WE ARE ALL THE SAME. WTF IS WRONG WITH US??
Major appologies if this offended anybody. Just realize that we are the same and you should have your own thoughts. Don't go by a book that tells you what to do--especially the bible. That book contradicts itself so many times.
--THE OVERLY TIRED JEW
Yeah, but then when the horses don't drink the water we beat them and scream at them and call them liars and sinners and tell them that they are heathens and going to hell. That's what I don't approve of in Christian religion. It's not a matter of trying to spread the word so much as it is being in control of other people and being deemed as the "right" religion. But if a Jew or a Muslim did the same to Christians, it would be an infringement on the Christians right to religion. (ie: Fred Phelps feels that by the courts ruling to ban funeral protests, it is infringing upon his right to practice Christian religion, but he doesn't give a fuck about other people's religion or the infringements his comments, signs and protests press upon those who aren't Christian...it is also many Christians opinions that by removing prayer from public schools (or other places it doesn't belong) Jews and other religions are infringing on their religious freedoms, where as the christians don't care if having prayer or jesus or any other religious connotation in public places infringes on the rights of other people.)
I don't know if there is a God. Sometimes I wonder. I think the ideas about heaven and hell are complete bullshit, to be perfectly honest, for a number of reasons. I think a lot of religion is just a tool, a means of doing things. But for the most part, I believe there is SOMETHING out there. I just don't think (and I certainly don't hope) it's how Christians portray it.
josh77,
The noted atheist philospher Antony Flew recently changed his position on God, saying he couldn't conceive of a universe that wasn't made by a creator. He reached this position after a lifetime spent studying logic and considering the nature of the universe.
I can understand why you're repelled by organized religion, and you're correct that many wars have been waged and much suffering has been caused in the name of religion. But to confuse the tragic results produced by flawed men, with the proposition that God does indeed exist, doesn't stand up even to the most elementary of logical analysis.
Walking around in the world with your 8-year old sons and telling them that there is no God is like putting dinner on the table and telling them there are no such things as plants or animals. Everything in the universe - indeed, the universe itslef - had to have come from somewhere, and as Flew observed, it is impossible to follow any theory of the universe's creation back to that moment before it appeared, and arrive at any conclusion other than: There has to be a God. Call God "creator" or whatever if you wish, but at least try and work through the impossible question of how all of this got here.
Then ask yourself why it is that most of us have such strong moral beliefs, such strong convictions about right and wrong. Why is it that we teach our children to do certain things, while not doing other certain things? Why do we punish murderers and rapists? Why do we get so angry when we see our natural resources abused and squandered? How did so many humans come to the same conclusion about core issues of morality - murder, rape, robbery, etc. - if not by some implanting of it by our creator? Without a creator to "set the rules" in the beginning, how is it that such a wide variety of races and cultures all arrived at pretty much the same set of morals, and, despite millennia of continually expanding knowledge, maintained more or less the same morals as we did since before recorded history?
A belief that Jesus isn't the son of God and your savior is something that can at least be articulated reasonably using logic, but the belief that there is no God at all fails every reasonable logical test there is.
As to why people in different cultures have different religions, a compelling case can be found in the Christian Bible, specifically the command to spread the Gospel of Christ to all the people. Christians are under God's judgement, and part of that judgement will be based on how well we did in sharing the Gospel. We are commanded to lead horses to water, but whether or not they drink is up to them and their free will.
There certainly does not have to be a God for the universe to have existed. There is a new theory now that the universe may have always existed, I think it's called the steady state theory. Can't wrap your head around that? Well I can't either! Human beings use God and religion to explain the things they don't have the answers to yet.
If I didn't understand why I wasn't born with wings like a bird do you think me praying every night for wings to magically appear will make them appear? Of course not! This is the same with religion. We get this idea in our thick heads that praying to some magical God or force will save us in some way, when in fact there is simply no scientific evidence that God or a heaven exists. I know I have a terrible depression and when I was younger and had a very similar depression praying did nothing to help me. If there was a God wouldn't people with terminal illnesses simply be alive today through prayer?
This isn't how things go in this world. Farrah Fawcett prayed ot beat her cancer and she still died. I'm only using that example because it's been talked about alot recently. No my friend simply hoping that after you die you'll be whisked off to some magical place where you'll be reunited with your family and loved ones is just wishful thinking. What would heaven look like? How can matter just magically appear in a completely different place after we die? Reincarnation is the same thing; just wishful thinking. There is no scientific process that will allow a dead person to magically become a new life.
For thousands of years men and women have prayed to deities and still died and guess what? They're not coming back! If we really want to do something to not die so soon than we should be working on ending the aging process through a scientific intervention at the molecular level. Luckily there is work being done in this area. But until we've solved this riddle people will continue to die and there's nothing we can do about it, no matter how much we'd like to.
My dad used to say "God is believing in what you know just ain't so." Think about it, it just doesn't make any sense.
So it is illogical to not believe in a god (or "creator") because that is the only possible explanation for the existence of the universe? That the only reason humans have a sense of morality and ethics is because it was instilled into their being by some supreme power? For you to claim that the only logical explanation is that we we created by god is in itself illogical. How can you state that as fact? Because it's the only explanation that makes sense to you?
I don't understand how people can live their lives trying to literally follow the words of a story book written thousands of years ago which is full of contradictions. Can these people not think for themselves? They need a book to tell them how to live their lives and how to think? To tell them what their opinions on issues like homosexuality and marriage and capital punishment are supposed to be? That's not to say there aren't a lot of positive things in the bible, but they have nothing to do with religion. They have everything to do with common sense. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, right? That's the only rule a person needs to live a happy life. I guarantee that thought process was around LONG before the Romans popularized Christianity and it's corresponding documentation. If everybody followed that rule, all 6 billion people on the planet, we'd have nothing to worry about. But people are too busy discriminating, being hateful of other people for worshipping the wrong god, for having beliefs that their precious religion's instruction manual forbids.
If you look at my initial statement, I said that I told my sons that they can believe in god if they want to. I will let them use their own free will and make that decision for themselves. I also told them that I don't believe in god. I never told them there is no god, that is not my place. That would be the kind of absolute that would come out of the mouth of a religious person.
Also, Anthony Flew has been so vague about his official position in recent years that it's hard to even keep track any more. I wouldn't put much credit into whatever official position he is subscribing to this week.
Relgion IS the biggest problem facing mankind. It always has been. And I refuse to believe that there HAS to be a god just because there is no other way to explain the beginning of the universe. By that logic, there HAS to be something that created god, as well (right? had to come from somewhere, just like the universe did). And because the popular theory is that god was just always there, then the whole concept in itself is flawed- because by that reasoning, I could just say that the universe was just always there. There's your logic.
Just look at all the wars in the history of mankind. The vast majority are due to religion. THAT is the legacy of religion. Stefanie and tangle, you two are right on the money with your posts. There is no reason a person in this day and age needs religion. You can lead a perfectly normal, moral life without it. Anyone who says otherwise is just ignorant. All of the Christians out there, what if they were born in China or India or Iraq to a completely different lineage, then they would believe in whatever religion is prominent in that respective area. Then THAT would be the true religion to them, instead of what they believe in now, and they might even hate the very thing that they believe in right now. So what do you do? How do you know if you're even picking the right religion to begin with? Get one of those 50-sided D&D dice with a religion on each side, give it a roll and cross your fingers? What if you pick the wrong one, and every time you pray to your "god" your just pissing off the real one more and more? The sooner mankind can either a)Get rid of religion completely or b)completely eliminate religious beliefs from having any bearing on other religions/governments/discrimination/society in general, the better we will be for it. Hey, it's no skin off my back if you want to pray to a pretend diety of some sort but I don't ever want to hear about it or have it impact my life in any way EVER. I have twin 8 year old sons, I already told them I don't believe in any god but they can if it makes them feel better, I'm sure as they get older and begin to develop independent thought processes (as I did as I got older) that they will be able to see the truth. Heck, I went to a Catholic school for 5 years as a child and it was not until I got older that I broke free of the nonsense they teach in parochial schools. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate anyone just because of their religion. Believe whatever makes you happy. I just think religion in general is the root of most of the problems on this planet. In future generations, if humans live that long, I believe religion will be phased out of society altogether. At least, I hope so.
I am a muslim, and what i know about my religion is that Islam never teaches us to hate people of other faith, but yes Islam does tell us not to expect any good from Non-Muslims, as they can never be our friends. Islam tells us to have a good working relationship with other religions, but don't hate others just because of their faith or race or anything.
Most Christians aren't Biblical literalists, but most Christians do believe in the inerrancy of the Bible, and if you view Christianity with hostility or suspicion, it's key that you understand the difference between literalism and inerrancy.
Literalism is believing that Adam and Eve really walked around in the Garden of Eden, had conversations with a serpent, and were kicked out by God for disobeying His orders about not eating a certain piece of fruit.
Inerrancy is believing, if you wish, that Genesis chapter 3 is a parable, a story meant to illustrate a point; but also understanding and believing the essential meaning of Genesis 3: That man is sinful by nature, and by that sin separates himself from God (in theological lingo this is called the Doctrine of the Fall). This sin will separate us from God forever, but there is a way out, a way to be saved from eternal separation.
To understand the mission and meaning of Christ, the well-known words of John 3:16 are where you can begin: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life." This is the essence of the New Covenant: That man is redeemed through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus on the cross - Christ died for our sins so we don't have to.
To understand the reason Christians think they "have it right" - why they dismiss Islam, Buddhism, etc. - you have to begin with John 14:6 - "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." If John 3:16 defines Christ as the Son of God, John 14:6 defines Him as the ONLY Son of God, the only way into the kingdom of heaven. This is also referred to as the "uniqueness" of Christ - only He offers salvation.
Christians are often criticized for not being logical, but in fact this is an exercise of pure logic married to an exercise of pure faith: Either Jesus is who He says He is in the Bible, or not. If He isn't, then Christianity is false, and whatever awaits us after death, if anything, may or may not be attained by belief in a Jesus Christ who is not, in fact, the Son of God.
But.
If Jesus is the Messiah, if the Bible has it right, if John 14:6 is true, then those who do not believe in Jesus Christ as their savior will not enter heaven. That is what drives evangelical Christians. In Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands us to "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." It is the love of Christ for them that evangelicals feel, which they transpose to those who aren't Christians. They transpose it to people who don't believe - and often people who revile them for their beliefs - because of Christ's command to spread the news that He died for their sins, so they don't have to. But it also animates the fierceness with which they defend the faith. However, anti-Semitism, like all forms of racism, is wrong. It is un-Christian and there is no Scriptural basis for it.
But don't mistake Christianity as an easy path, or dismiss Christians as starry-eyed goofballs who think they're perfect. Certainly there are plenty of those types, but Christianity is a very difficult path - Jesus promises that if you take up your cross, you will invite hatred and persecution. And Christians believe anything but the notion that they're perfect. In fact, they believe that their imperfections - their sins - make them unworthy of Christ's sacrifice. But they also celebrate the fact that the gift of God's love and salvation comes with only one condition: Accept His Son Jesus Christ as your savior.
That is what Christians mean by Grace: A gift you don't deserve, but which is freely offered. The commenter above neatly explains away religion as something concocted to help people deal with the uglier aspects of life. Perhaps that's true, but it doesn't sound like many questions were asked on the way to that conclusion. The commenter above also says that the main problem with religion is intolerance, which is a sad but all-too-common mis-characterization.
In Christianity at least, there are far greater sins than intolerance, and of course there can be nothing called "sinful" without establishing first the fact that it should not be tolerated. To say that there is nothing that should engender intolerance in us is to say that nothing - not murder, rape, child molesting - deserves to be prohibited. So anyone who goes to the mat over civil rights, environmentalism, etc., has already admitted that there are such things as eternal, objective rights and wrongs. If you wouldn't tolerate someone who doesn't respect what the Sierra Club says about the environment, it's difficult to fault someone for not wanting to tolerate something described as sinful in a book they consider to be the Word of God given to man. The recognition of good and bad, right and wrong, is one of the easiest paths down which you will find Jesus Christ, waiting for you.
I don't hate Jews, but I hate the Zionists that use Jews as Human Shields. Israel doesn't speak for the Jewish People. Imagine if Catholics invaded Vatical City, then made the US Government pay for their WMDS to use against the Romans? If the Jews claim to be chosen by God then let them prove it with non violence. With the resistance in Lebanon.
Tangle,
great post. I agree.
Well, this article certainly did not shed any light on why people hate jews. Apparently that was not its purpose.
I [n]ever really understand how people can get so wrapped up in religion. In my opinion, religion was developed for two specific reasons; in order to help people deal with the inevitability of death, and to help people teach morals.
I agree, but I would propose another reason for the advent of religion as a cornerstone institution of every "successful" society (and I think that, if you can understand my line of reasoning, it might help you to find answers to some of your questions about the permeation of bigotry in religions). My proposition is that the third essential purpose of religion was to "otherize" people from different groups. In the early days of humanity, surely religion's sole purpose was to attempt to explain the seemingly impossible - death, weather, seasons, etc. With the rise of agriculture, humans experienced a massive upheaval to the very structure of their society. People started staying in one place, living in larger groups. This necessitated the institution of "values." Before the rise of large city-states (places with governments to enforce the laws of the land, such as Sumeria, Assyria, Babylon, etc) it was religion that served as the binding force to keep values in place (nobody likes the thought of eternal damnation). In fact, religion played a key role in the formation of these kingdoms. Its been this way since time immemorial: if you're on God's side, all the better to get people to call you their King -you're either the earthly manifestation of said God, or it is by His Will that you've been allowed to rise to power (:::cough cough::: President Bush). Religion helped cement these first attempts at civilization together. Keep in mind though, that there were many city-states competing for power, and war was a constant. How better to convince your people that they should indeed risk their own lives in war than to send them on a Holy Quest to wipe out the heathens who dare to disrespect YOUR God by worshiping a false god?? (As I type this I find myself deeply disturbed that this is about the exact same position we're in right now, and how depressing it is that we really haven't changed much in 5,000 years.)
Anyway, these are just my thoughts on the matter. I think the reason for the bigotry inherent in religion is obvious: religion by its nature breeds exclusivity, and that is one of its fundamental purposes, however subconscious that purpose may be to the majority of its proponents. Its really quite simple: when you otherize a group it is easier to commit atrocities on that group (think: slavery, the Holocaust, terrorism). A group can be otherized by any arbitrary means (the color of their skin, where they live, how they live, etc) but the most effective form of this is to play on people's personal belief systems and to otherize another group based on who they pray to. People take an affront to their belief system personally offensive, and this makes it much easier to send them out to murder, I mean war.
People get wrapped up in their religions for a variety of reasons, and I don’t hold that against anyone - humans are by nature spiritual creatures, and we require an outlet for this aspect of our nature. However, the major fault of most religions is intolerance. Spiritual, religious individuals should strive to maintain an attitude of tolerance and understanding that although their beliefs may not coincide with those of others, there is room in the world for all of us; allow your God to make His Judgments and don’t be so arrogant as to make them yourself.
My only hope is that logic and reason will prevail. For all the shortcomings of our society, it’s a move in the right direction that technology now provides for information to be so freely exchanged. Perhaps enough people will eventually expand their worldviews to allow for the existence of other belief systems that we won't all be wiped out by the international culture war that has been precipitated by religious intolerance.

I think you pretty much nailed it.
As to the guest who claimed I was being misled by my priest or pastor-I don't go to church, and haven't since I was about 11. How can anyone be misleading me?
Outlooks like that are what piss me off about Christians. You take the bible so literally, a book written thousands of years ago and rtranslated so many times up to the point of the King James version that you can't even be sure any of it is as originally scripted. You have not one iota of proof the KJV is the intended "book" God wished everyone to live by, yet you absolutely condemn anyone who doesn't choose to believe in it. That fact is, I don't live by the bible or by a set way of religion, and I feel I'm better off for it. What makes the Bible any more legitimate than the Torah, or the Kuran?
The one thing I have actually supported lately in my own religion of Catholocism is the Pope actually trying to help the relationships between Catholics and Jews.
And I love how everyone bitches that the Jews put Jesus to death-if the Jews didn't put Jesus to death, he wouldn't have died for our sins and there'd BE no Christianity would there? God intended for Jesus to die, someone had to do it. The Jews did what God intended for Jesus.
I just don't get why people can't just live and let other's live too. Why everyone gets up in arms about faith based ideas.
The age of the book, or truth itself, has nothing to do with applicability. Truth is truth whether scratched on rock, poked in clay or inked on paper. It is timeless.
I could scratch "dolphins have wings and vaginas are made of synthetic roses" on a rock and say God told me so. Does that make it true?
There is no truth to religion. Only faith and belief.
About that serial killer, Robert Charles Browne
A statement from the family of Faye Aline Self
Open Letter to: Sheriff Norman and all of the deputies of the Red River Parish Sheriffs Department and the Louisiana State Police
Because of recent revelations in the press, we would like to state clearly that we do not fault you, nor any of the current law enforcement officers of the Red River Parish Sheriffs Department. The missing police files, the missing evidence may not have been mishandled by this present administration. If it is not your fault; however, it has now become your responsibility.
Just because time has held at bay the truth of what happened to her, it does not absolve this department for it's neglect from long ago in finding her and finding the truth. That certain key people have died since then, also in no way resolves this issue.
Faye Aline Self is still missing and in the confessions of a killer she has been dead for a long time. We accept that she is gone but we will never accept that she was not worth looking for 23 years ago or still today.
The ones who were sworn to protect and serve, namely the Red River Parish Sheriffs Department, betrayed Faye Aline in every way possible in the immediate aftermath. The children she loved so dearly deserve and will now be demanding answers that the Red River Parish Sheriffs Department could have, and should have given long ago.
Specifically we are asking that :
1. The Red River Sheriffs Department allow members of her family to examine the files they do have that have not "disappeared" so that we can help in making connections that may have been overlooked.
2. We also are asking for specific information on how they intend to proceed with trying to discover if there were any bodies recovered in that time frame that may have been buried as Jane Does. We are all available for any DNA samples to aid in possibly identifying whether any bodies previously recovered might be hers. We request the police do a rigorous and thorough search with any means available.
3. We ask for an investigation into the missing files. An empty folder in the trunk of a sheriffs car would lead us to believe that the files were removed by someone in the department. How would anyone except a police agent have access to her file or have the opportunity to dispose of the contents. We want an investigation by another agency because we lack confidence in the ability of the Sheriff's department to investigate itself. Her file did not go missing over decades; it was missing within months of her disappearance. No rational explanation has ever been given, and this is simply no longer acceptable.
We are particularly aghast and horrified to know that this man was the first named by the family of Wanda Hudson as a suspect. We also have learned evidence is missing in that murder case as well. Not surprisingly, her family has also long believed that in the case of Wanda Hudson there was a police cover up. They have now also stated it publicly.
It is hard not to feel just as hurt for them as we do for such a tragic loss within our own lives. We feel a deep kinship with them and wish their family the best.
This situation is so unimaginably difficult and shocking, we are still trying to gather all of our kin back together. We are unsure how to proceed in the aftermath of such a complete failure of the system, which has left a wake of sorrow that is 23 years long.
We want her home. All we ever wanted was for her to return to us.
It is still our only objective and hope. We have been told that since nothing was done then, that perhaps nothing can be done now. Again, this is unacceptable. Twenty three years was not enough time for us to forget what was taken from us.
It is past time for this town and the police agencies to do the right thing for one missing woman and two women who were savagely murdered..

Uhh...I think you have the wrong blog?
People hate Jews for the same reason they hate Muslims, or Christians, or gays or interacial mixing or whatever...
It is all an excuse to keep from evolving into something better. Something less murderous and thieving.
You are paddling around in the same leaky boat as most Christians. You only know the verse, or two, from the Bible, from last Sunday's sermon, which was, more than likely, espousing of lovely multiculturalism. Your Pastor or Priest, if younger than 50, has been taught his "Christian" religion by the deceiving Jews in his seminaries. Jesus told you He came for the lost sheep of Israel. If He meant Jews, He was standing in the middle of the largest concentration of Jews on the planet in those days. He, nor His disciples ministered to the Jews. He did condemn them, as children of the devil though. Read John chapter 8. The Jew has brainwashed the clergy into referring to the Hebrew Israel as Jews. The Jews were not Hebrew and didn't exist as an identified people until the return from Babylonian captivity. The Jews have usurped the identity of Israel and that is the only thing fools in the pulpit and their totally ignorant followers see. They are too lazy to actually read their Bible. It is more convenient to hug a Jew and spit on Jesus and call Him a liar. Continue this train of thinking at the peril of your own soul.
People like you keep bringing up the bible as if it were some kind of factual book. Instead of relying on religious scriptures to tell you what is true and what is not, instead maybe look beyond what has been taught in any religion and start looking towards science as that has the only known and empirical facts that will save this society.
It is also obvious that you are at least somewhat prejiduced against Jews. Jews have been persecuted throughout history and have been blamed for just about everything. The reality I see is that most Jews I know are hard working, honest, and have achieved great success because they worked extra hard and wanted great things. Call it an inferiority complex gone haywire.
If you tell a group of people long enough that they are inferior, weak, and that they are terrible people they will rise up and want to prove the opposite to the world. I know that alot of prejiduce stems from complete irrational hate of people simply being different than you. And Jews have not assimiliated and have remained stubborn in many ways. This pisses people off!
If you ever come into contact with real jews you'll immidiately find that they are warmer, more compassionate and more helpful than your average person. However some Jews in the top of the political spectrum who have the power have done terrible things. I don't agree with what Israel is doing to the Palestinians even though I think they deserve to live there. Conversely I don't like what radical muslims are doing to the Jews and other people. Blowing themselves up in the name of some false God is never the way to go.
Basically I hate religion if only for all the hate, wars, and prejiduce it has caused over the years. If people didn't feel the need for division among other humans and realized that all humans are fragile creatures who need all the help in the world than we would be making some progress.
I am really sick of people picking on Jews and it's if God forbid a jew does something wrong suddenly he or she is the devil incarnate who wants to destroy us. This kind of reasoning is fallacious and should be stopped.
Before I proceed to my actual commentary, I just want to say that I think this comment is hillarious. Jesus was a Jew, dingleberry. His followers were all Jews. The first sects of Christianity were considered to be little Jewish cults by the Romans, but since you've never watched the History Channel you wouldn't know that. It's because the Jews run the History channel isn't it?
It's nice to know you're actually paying attention to they teachings of your beloved GEEEEEEZUS.
no offense or anything but while evry1 is saying that the bible says jews are bad and homosexuals are bad and all...has anyone evr thought that the bible could be wrong? or maybe that god is't real to begin with and He's an excuse for people to kill and hate each other? that's my opinion. im not atheist or anything but come on. so maybe if we all eliminated the idea of having a religion we couldnt hate jews because the jews would be the same as the christians. i no it's all to confusing.
my point is that it is really stupid how people hate jews or blacks or hispanics or muslim. we're all people and those who are neonazi or kkk or pronazi or prohate...well they SUCK ASS! people hate them because blaming others is a lot easier than blaming ur self and people in this world are so careless and lazy that if 6 million people die it's no big deal since then they feel better about themselves. the fact of the matter is that even if u eliminate what u hate then u have nothing left to hate but yourselves...
thats what i would have sed to adolf hitler
The hatred and/or mistrust of the Jews has nothing to do with the religious aspect of it per se. Most come into it because of the religious angle vis a vis jews are responsible for Christs earthly death. Once you get beyond that one begins to notice that jews are such a tiny minority in this country yet they hold enormous influence over our society. eg media, Hollywood, politics. Couple that with the various laws throughout the world that make it illegal to even question the Holocaust. Regardless of the veracity of the event, to mention the subject in less than a fawning and reverent manner can get you jailed. It'll happen in America soon. Finally, anyone wishing to really delve into the anti-jewish situation must keep two things in mind. First, investigate Ashkenazi and Sephardic jews. One group is Semitic, one is not. Secondly, investigate why it is that throughout history, the jews have been expelled or worse from virtually every society since humans have been on earth. Why is that? Has every society just been 'anti-semitic'? It begs the question.
i was happy for jews when they got a homeland. But saddened when within 1 year I saw soldiers pulling up new olive trees planted by palestine people and shoving the ones that tried to stop them to the ground and hitting them with riffel buts.
It mad me unhappy to see that on TV ... as the years went by i saw horrable things done to men women and children by israel soldiers. After the suffering jews did under Hitler it shocked me to see what they were doing. in recent years I watched on TV as israel soldiers bulldosed palestine peoples homes to the ground and som with the people in them cause they did not get out immediatly when ORDERED to.
I read the story of what they did to Rachel Corriein an American 23 years olsd in 2003
she was peeading with israel soldiers not to bulldose the peoples house down because they were good people and even let her stay with them. All the did was to go to palestine to try to help the people which were suffering very much under the yoke of israel.
She stood in front of the bulldoser beging the soldiers not to do such a horrable thing thrie reply was to just run over her.
she said i think my back is broked and they just backed over her agin grinding her into the sand. Murder is bad BUT that kind of grusomr murder to me is as bad if not worse than Hitler did.
Now i am not happy for the jews any longer. I do HATE the zion outlaw barbaric nation of israel as much as i hated Hitlers nazi people. I am ashamed of my country the USA for backing israel with WMD and $$$$ for war machines.
That does not mean that i hate jews no more than I hated German people whos nazi government i did HATE.
if that makes me anti semetic then so be it. If i can be punished for saying what is in my heart so be that too.
anyone that lies about it for feer of being called anti semetic should let the world know that ANY ONE convinced against their will IS of the same opinion still ONLY MORE SO.
I respect your answer guest. I don't think it is melevolent or hurtful, and I think (maybe I'm wrong) that it's not jews you hate, it's the ations Israeli's have taken lately that you hate. Am I correct?
That's not the kind of "jew hating" I was refering to with this post. I was refering to simply targeting hate at Jews (esp in America) simply because they are not Christian. People like the KKK believing that Jews do not have a right to live here, do not have a right to succeed, are going to hell and deserve to be hated. That is the kind of intolerence I cannot stand. I don't think your point of view is intolerence. I think it is how most people feel-that no matter what religion or race, hurting others is wrong. I never said there were no bad Jewish people, as there are bad people in every race religion and culture. In the end, I believe in 2 types of people; good and bad.
Just something on the KKK, they also lynched Irish Roman Catholics. As far as I know the first reported killings carried out by the Klan were Irish. The history of the Irish and African American are not dissimiliar, both groups were seen as subhuman and closer to apes by the British white Anglo-Saxon Presbyterians who used to breed Irish and African slaves in the Carribbean like animals.
In regard to anti-Jewish sentiment, mine comes from the use of the word 'anti-semitism' as a kind of race-card gagging order which is drawn out any time a non-Jew criticizes anything remotely connected with the Jewish people, Israel or the Jewish religion. Nobody likes being called a racist simply because they disagree with somebody, it provokes a 'fuck-you' kinda reaction from me.
