Why do you have to be 21 to drink? We are considered adults at 18. We can serve our country at 18. We can smoke at 18. We can buy a house or car when we are 18. And we can have kids when we want. Everything we do can be done at 18 or younger expect for drinking. Most everyone drinks before they are 21. Why do we have to wait until we are 21 the legally drink? Does this make since to any one? For example take my self. My birthday is May 21 and I will be the big 21 this year. I had twin girls when I was just 17 years old. I got a part time job right out of high school and attended college fulltime. I got married at 19 years old to my husband who is was also 19, will no be 21 until August 8, 2008, and purchased a vehicle with my new husband. At the age of 20, I and my husband purchased our first house. To this date, May 16, 2008 neither one of us can currently drink legally but as I stated before most people which includes me and my husband drink before we are 21. We drink at our house which makes it legal because it is our house.
Why do you have to be 21 to drink but can serve the country at 18?

this year was my senior year..
and of course my senior prom well we had this state trooper come to talk to us the day before prom and he told us that 21 is the legal drinkin age because your brain isnt fully developed until 21 and alcohol goes staright to your brain.. and can cause problems..
not sure if he was just tellin us that or if it is true but just thought i would share that with you.

But everything I've learned in Ed Psych suggests this is true. Which makes me wonder-- Why are we sending 18 year old children to war? The age for that should be 21 too.

If you think about it though 18 is when you graduate from high school thats why they get kids to fight for their country, to get them on a straight and narrow and as of right now you can choose to go into the military or not. Also who cares what the drinking age is my 15 year old brother has no problem getting someone to go on a packy. You can wait till 21 its not that hard you dont need to drink to live your life
CatSmit : )
THe age does seem arbitrarilly picked but I am sure with a little research we could find out the exact reasoning behind it. I do know that at the of 18 we all think we are adults and grown up. Some of us might have situations that make us maturer. but this is not true for everyone. Most 18-20 year olds are immature with less life experience and less capable in handling alcohol and so to keep the stupid safe the mature get punished.
Other countries have lower age restrictions and so the glamour of the drink is removed which some how lowers what we would call alcohol related accidents.
Not sure why, but it sure does give us something to look forward to and another thing to measure our growth mile stones....there is not another big B-day to look to till you turn fifty...21 or 18 will seem so silly by the time that happens, huh?

I still have a year and some change for that B-day...I will let you know how it goes. I do know one thing though, I am not looking forward to it, I am not dreading it either. I am more looking forward to my baby girls big ole second birthday. I guess life after children changes the way birthdays are planned.

hmmm my sleuthery skills are sub-par, it seems. you are more than 4 years older than me if you are at least 30. :-P
My best birthday ever is going to be on Thursday when I sit in on opening night of the new Indiana Jones movie. :-D (which better be much more decent than the newer Star Wars movies. George Lucas, do not let me down.)

it makes no logical sense why an 18 year old can serve his country and die for it, yet he can't drink until he is 21 or she. I agree with ediblewomen on this I think you shouldn't be able to sign up for the army until you are 21. Most countries you can drink when you turned 18. It used to be like that in the 80's I believe, but they changed it. The problem is too many people are irresponisble with alcohol. But still I get your point. you already beat me to a blog ranting this conflict lol.
