Bomb Threats

(This actually happened in September of 2006)

There was a bomb threat at school 2 days ago. Scary stuff(?). Apparently someone wrote on the wall "bomb threat" or something like that and of course the school must take everything and anything like that seriously.

I was sitting in Spanish class doing work and we heard the little "beep" sound that meant an announcement was about to be made: "Students and teachers, THIS IS A LOCK DOWN. Please perform the necessary drill until further notified." CLICK.

I swear, that click of the phone hanging up is the worst sound. Because once you hear that half a second "click" you know there are a few people who are bound to freak out. Personally, I'm not bothered at all.

Luckily no one in Spanish class got freaked out, because it's quite annoying when people do. I mean, I can understand if someone's scared about it but uncontrollable sobbing and whining is not necessary. Actually, if there really was someone in the school with a gun or something, acting like that would only DRAW attention to us. Come on people, how old are we now?

Anyway, we all quickly shuffled across the room to the assigned wall and we sat with our backs against it - which was pretty stupid. You know why? Directly across from where we sat there are HUGE glass windows that are open and don't have any blinds.... which sort of defeats the purpose of being "hidden" if you ask me.

So we're still sitting against the wall chatting quietly (oh yes - I forgot to mention the teacher had locked the doors for the drill). I was sitting right next to one of the doors. Then, all of a sudden there's a banging/pulling of the door! I don't mean like a "knock knock" but a "BANG BANG" so we ALL jumped in the air out of fright (especially me; I was DIRECTLY next to the door).

Our hearts were still beating unbelievably fast (well, I know mine was anyway) because you're not supposed to look out the doors during a lock down in case someone is out there.

Well, obviously someone was out there.

Then, the announcements came back on, introduced by the infamous 'beep': "Okay students, the lock down is over, you may now resume your normal class schedule."

And it turns out that the banging/shaking of the door were people who worked at the school that were going around to check that teachers had locked their doors and they also wanted to give us a little scare. How nice.

What do you think about bomb threats in schools and the drills/procedures taken when one is in effect? I’ve heard several different opinions about what should be done.
