Democrazy: Part 1

When I turn on the television and I watch the news, I can't help but think that we do not have a democracy, but a democrazy. The elections are becoming less about beliefs, and more about who is wearing the best tie or make-up. We treat the candidates as celebrities instead of leaders.

I recently read Barack Obama's book, The Audacity of Hope, and I think that he knows what I am talking about. Obama tells a story about how he went to lunch with his campaign manager. He asked for dijon mustard, but his campaign manager did not allow it because he did not want the public to know that Barack liked Dijon mustard. Why should we care? Since when does which type of mustard a candidate likes affect how well he will lead our country?

This scares me. If this is how we will choose our leaders, than we might as well just raise the white flag right now. Our choices should be based on careful scrutiny of beliefs and past experiences, not what color the candidates tie is. As an high school student getting ready to register to vote, I hope my peers are not making their decision based on mustard.

The political race is just that, a race. A war. A competition of who can get stronger, faster, and tougher. Who can beat their competition into a pulp and steal their voters. But it shouldn't be a war. It should be based on individual choice, beliefs, ideas, values, morals, etc. Candidates should spend less time arguing, and more time telling America how they can make it better.

This is a call to action, to both political candidates and voters. Please help turn our democrazy back into a democracy.

Please check back soon, as part 2 of the democrazy article is soon to come. I plan to write about republicans vs. democrats, politics in general, etc.

It began with Kennedy. He looked good on TV. Before that, presidential candidates weren't expected to look good, or even to look presidential.

Now, with the immediacy of information afforded by the internet, we can judge candidates on how they wipe their asses. Democrazy is a good word for it!
