WHAT ARE YOU?

I have a Pet Peeve. I am not sure how many other people many have to deal with this, but please let me know if you do. Since high school I have been asked the same stupid question from in my opinion some stupid people. What are you? I have had countless people come up to me and ask, "What are you?" The first time someone asked me this question, I was not sure what they were asking. I thought they were being rude, funny, or just a smart ass. I looking at them strangely and just said, "A person." They laughed as if I was making a joke and said no "What are you? Black, white?" I simply answered Mixed and walked away. I thought it was a stupid question to ask someone out of the blue you don’t even know. The other question I hate even more is: "What color are you?" I have never even though of asking anyone these sorts of questions. Maybe because my family is so diverse and I’m used to seeing people of multi-race that I never look at someone and think, "What are they?" I really don’t care what they are. There are more important things that make someone who they are. When I see someone or meet someone for the first time, I never say to them, "What are you?" I tend to say, "Hello. How are you? And you are?"

It's awkward. It's very difficult to tell my ethnicity by just looking at me because I'm a mixture. I went into a gas station once and the cashier asked me that question, point blank. It was pretty awkward.

For me people are always asking me what where I'm from. Usually they think it's some other country. I'm from NJ. I've never even been on vacation out of the country. So it's kind of funny to me. I guess the situation is a bit different, but I guess I can relate a little.

This used to happen to me all the time since elementary school. Perfect strangers would ask me this same question. My response would be mixed with black and white because the next question would be "What are you mixed with?" My responce to this would be both. Sometimes it would go even further with the queston "So which one do you consider yourself?" To this I answer both, because I do not deny who I am like Halle Berry.

Funny you should bring that up. A lot of mixed celebrities only claim one race. i really don't get why. it's like completly ignoring apart of who you are. Halle Berry has a white mother who raised her, but maintains she is black.
