Lets Rock this VOTE

The youth vote has been minimal in the past, but now as we enter a new day and age, and as the baby boomer generation begins to die down, the youth is left to decide who shall lead this great country of ours. For many years the youth vote was typically ignored, but now the candidates are beginning to realize that America's youth plays a major part in the vote. Many young voters are becoming the determining factor in who wins the election, whether primary or general elections. The youth is becoming more involved in the election because more and more policies and current events are beginning to affect them. When events start to affect them, they want to have more of a say in what happens. By voting in the elections they are voicing the person who they believe will represent them the best. The events that are affecting the youth today are also affecting the older generation as well, only the youth have a greater impact. The War in Iraq is a major concern for many young voters. Many of the youth have friends/family/loved ones who are entering the service and would like to see them return safely. Since the War in Iraq is a major issue on the campaign, the youth is putting their voice out there of what they would like to see happen. In addition college and tuition is becoming another major concern of the public parties. With the economy raising all its prices, the cost of tuition is also rising. Many young voters are still in college and are having to try and find a way to pay for it, with the price increase on the way, many young voters are putting their trust and decisions into who they voter for in the elections. So lets Rock this Vote.

And I am so excited for this. But at the same time it scares me...knowing that the country's...and world's problems are going to be in the hands of my generation. In some ways it gets me pumped to get out there and try to have an impact, and in others it terrifies me beyond words...because I feel so unready to take on responsibility. This year will be my first year being able to vote and I know that I have developed certain senses of morality and I have some strong opinions, but at the same time I feel the need to know more before I make a decision. I think there are many brilliant and furious young voters out there who are ready to get in the game...but I also think that we need to be careful. We still need to look to previous generations for their words of wisdom...as much as they may have messed up on some things they are the ones who have been through it. We need to provide the world with new solutions to old problems but at the same time we need to watch where we step, we need to pay attention and not make mistakes that could have been avoided had we just listened to the signs.

I'm thrilled that our generation is getting to vote this year, but I'm also terrified. In this get-everything-now world it seems like a single trait will be the defining characteristic of this race. I've seen everything from people voting for Obama because he's black and for no other reason and for McCain because the VP's a woman and for no other reason. I'm not saying either vote is bad necessarily, but let's have a better reason, shall we? Maybe it's just my high school, and maybe it's just my high school that thinks this way, but it kind of scares me. Let's have a REASON for voting. A real reason.
