What's Eating Gilbert Grape Censorship

Recently one of the members of the Carroll, Iowa community stood
before the local school board with a copy of Penthouse Magazine in one
of her hands and a copy of What's Eating Gilbert Grape in the other,
claiming there was no difference between the two.  The act was in
support of the recent removal of Gilbert Grape from Carroll High
School curriculum.  The decision to remove the book was made solely by
district superintendent Rob Cordes without following proper protocol.
The decision outraged a number of students at CHS and prompted three
seniors to personally discuss the issue with Cordes.  During this
meeting Cordes openly acknowledged that he had not read the book in
its entirety, and only read the small section of the book in question.
News of the removal sparked outcry from the surrounding community.
These events were quickly picked up by local and national news
outlets. To make matters worse, there is now talk of attempting to ban
the book from the library.

Could someone explain why he would want the book banned in the first place?
