During the summer, I take walks in the streets of Manhattan. It is very crowded sometimes. There are people who smoke on the side of the street or while walking. Sometimes when they blow their smoke, they blow it in my face. I cough and curse at them under my breath. I don’t understand how they can stand to smoke. I also don't understand how they can smoke in the awful summer heat. Smoking is harmful, it causes cancer. Smokers don’t understand the dangers that they are producing to the environment. Smoking can affect the environment and the people in the environment, but it can also harm the smoker.
According to sikhwomen.com, “Burning tobacco is the main source of indoor pollution in the developed world as it contains over 4,000 dangerous chemicals.” This may be the reason why many people suffer from breathing related illness. Smoke contributes to the greenhouse effect. It produces carbon dioxide and methane. Companies use a lot of paper to produce cigarettes. This paper could be used in more useful ways. For example, it could contribute to more books for schools. Sikhwomen.com states: “Tobacco is the most widely grown non-food crop in 120 countries therefore less land is available for food crop. Between 10 to 20 million people could be fed if food crop was grown in its place.” Since there is not much space for cropping food, this may contribute to famine in some countries.
There are plenty of other reasons why a smoker should stop smoking.

Smoking is dumb. I'm so glad Illinois has it's new law that bans smoking in public places.
You're right. So many people smoke in NYC, it's like a plague. Why stay down by the government. CONTROL YOUR LIFE!

Every single smoker I've ever met is quite aware of the danger to themselves and the environment.
Sorry you ran into such rude people, but don't generalize that all smokers are rude. Personally I am always careful to not smoke around people who mind and if I'm smoking outside and happen to pass by a non-smoker, I make sure not to exhale smoke and to keep a good distance.
