Where has All the Music Gone?

swedish_chef's picture

Accolay, Dvořák, Rossini, Brahms, Holst, Sibelius, Copland, Musorgsky, Liszt. Does anyone know who these people are?

Does anyone know how they are all related besides the fact that it looks hard to pronounce? What is happening to our music?

In this day and age, it seems like we have forgot our past, our history. It was the creation of rock and roll when music started to change drastically. Things started to get electronic and people wanted something new, or rebel against their parents. But they forgot what came before. That music was and is slowly disappearing and has been around since before America was even discovered. And yet we are forgetting it, our piece of history.

It seems as if the music and songs of today rarely have a meaning now. A lot of young dreamers want to just make money rather than create music, not to share their passion for an art. Classical music had emotion, meaning, passion and just about any other adjective you can think of. It was real music.

Now, I’m not saying that all modern music is trash because I do listen to modern music, but it just seems like it’s going downhill. It’s just a song, not true music. And a lot of artists don’t even create their own songs, they probably just say if it sounds cool or not.

And I do understand that times have changed and that people’s tastes are changing (heck just look at ’60 and ‘80’s music) but it just seems like classical music is slowly fading away. Listen to a classical piece sometime and listen to what it’s saying, don’t just hear it. Do that and think about how much time and effort when into a 15+ minute piece with 15+ different parts to write, all in different clefs, and all by one person. Get a good recording of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony or Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, or Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D and listen to the emotion the players have. Listen to the harmony, the cords, rhythms, beats. Listen to what started music as we know it.

Because that is what it comes down to. Classical music is the reason why we have the music we do today. We have to remember where we came from and appreciate what they had. We should learn our past, every part of it, in order to improve the future. Don’t forget where we came from.

I actually like Mozart, Bach and Yoyo Ma. lol Though I'll never admit in front of my friends that I listen to classical music. I don't think many people can relate to classical music. There are no words. This generation is so used to lyrics feeding into the songs that without them, music would sound weird. Plus, I doubt people can just stop what they're doing to sit down and LISTEN to the music. We just don't have time anymore....

I know who every single one of those composers are, and I applaud you for posting this blog! As a musician, the decreasing lack of interest in symphonic music concerns me. I hope that through efforts like yours, we can revive classical music.

Oh and PS: For those of you who have never heard classical music before, try either Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Vaughan Williams or the second movement of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. They will blow you away.
