Karaoke at the Gay Bar

I sang Karaoke last night at a local gay bar called Craze. As I was on stage, my audience was ordering more shots to defer the awful Alanis Morrisette wannabe(i.e. me ) and I was looking at some of these guys and girls who I am so thrilled to have a part in their lives. Being in a primarily gay establishment as a heterosexual liberal is one of my most favorite pastimes. I have so much fun being around people who are comfortable with themselves and it is a rare thing to encounter. I am really excited that I am part of such a society that is still behind when it comes to these sensitive liberal issues but has accepted for the better half things that are not considered conventional by a republican conservative standard. The State Supreme court in California has voted in favor for gay marriage on the fifth of this month. I am a strong advocate for human rights no matter what your beliefs are this is a big step towards progress in our civilization. I can only hope that more states will follow in this trend, there are some really interesting interviews on Youtube about the decisions in California pros and cons if you get some time to check it out!

I don't know how it is in your town, but around here gay bar karaoke tends to draw pretty talented singers! I would never sing in front of all those choirboys! Kudos to you!

And I don't mean to pimp my blog, but it seems you might appreciate one I wrote a while ago, as it is about a unique moment of unity and inspiration in a gay bar. It's called "Progressivism is a Sermon in a Gay Bar Burlesque Show."

I'll provide a link, but don't feel obligated to read it.

Anyway, YAY FOR ALLIES!

I would love to read it! Yes three beers later and I was sure I was the best singer in the joint even though my over the top "just jack" style gay friend David came straight(no pun intended) from an 80's prom which I was sadly not invited to. I guess I'll have to hang up the Madonna style wedding dress for another day :( Anyways he overshadowed me by singing "wind beneath my wings" How do you come back from that I ask myself? Right by singing the angry woman anthem "you oughta know" off key and louder than the background music! I live in Erie Pennsylvania and tolerance is not one of our forte's so to have 2 notorious gay bars is huge and to be honest the one I frequent with my friends is one of the nicest bars in town. I'd like to think that there is progression in store but I'm not that optimistic. We have more catholic churches than we do Country Fair's which is terrifying but there is always hope for the future in my opinion. We must be the change we seek, right?
