why does college cost so much?

As a senior in high school, I've learned a lot about myself in the past four years. I've learned a lot about life and even more about how education will set the stage for a successful life. I just recently figured out my major so I've really been doing my research on colleges. I've been checking for which ones have my major, campus sizes, the extra curricular activities they offer but the most important thing that I must look at is how much it's going to cost me and possibly my family. The expenses of college have become so high for students. Parents, teachers and other adults have been stressing on going to college and how it will give us a better future. But how can you go to college if you have no money? Potential jobs are stressing on having college educations and for some kids they don't have the money to go college. Yes the government offers some financial aid but is it really enough? In most cases it really isn't. I think the government should offer more opportunities for students to get financial aid and offer more money for them to go to college so they don't have to be paying loans until they are 40 years old. Of course, there are scholarships but not many people can easily access them and find out where to look. Others have problems with their writing skills and even if they found scholarships, they can't take real advantage of them because they can't write an essay. Some students don't have their parents' money to fall back on. What about those kids? Colleges should be more affordable for students. I think that if they did become more affordable or you were able to get more money for them, more people would go. Therefore, more people would be successful and wouldn't have to go to such extremes to earn money. I'm not saying that people who don't go to college won't live good lives, I'm only saying that in this generation it's better to have a great job. We will have higher expenses to pay and having an actual job (not working at mcdonalds) will help us succeed and be able to afford the higher expenses. This is only my opinion but I truly think that these things should happen. It would make life that much easier for the future of this country. Please leave your comments on this matter, I would love to hear fellow students' opinions.

It was interesting I stumbled across this because I had just been thinking about the same issue. I agree with you. We're told all the first eighteen years of our lives to work towards college, we go there for an (average) four years, and then we spend the rest of our lives afterwards paying the loans off.

I was doing research on my major and I found out that the average medical student has over 100,000 in student loans. Oh boy! I don't even want to think about being that much in debt, but I guess upon graduation I better start thinking about it.

Doesn't really make sense does it? If you want to get a decent paying job, most of the time you need a degree. The jobs you get through college barely even pay for your degree. There is really no option other than getting a loan unless you have received a scholarship. I'm stuck paying everything myself, and it sucks. I do agree if college was cheaper more would go. But just look towards the future it will be worth it when your done and good luck!

College expense is a way to keep society in check. If everyone had the ability to go to college, then everyone would looking for work. There are way more students than jobs available; can you imagine if everyone could go to college?

Our economy would melt down.

I agree with you, there are so many deserving people who aren't able to get into college because of the cost... but we do have to understand that because not everyone can go to college, our society runs what society calls "smoothly".

Score one for the government, right? :)

I completely agree. Over the past year, I've been both pondering and cursing the high costs of college tuition as it significantly cuts down the number of institutions open to students. Sure, there are cheaper colleges, but they are not always very good academically. My brother is in his last year of college, and I will be entering next year, so my parents are very worried about costs. I am constantly being prodded into going to the cheap state school for the sole reason that it is less financially. It's frustrating and stressful.

I wish I had my parents to fall back on without them having to take out loans or a morgage on the house.Ive have been looking at alot of colleges and they range between17000.00 and 25000. per year for four years one school was 71000 for 22 months of eduacation not counting room and board on any of these schools. As it stands right now Im looking at living at home during my college time and oweing 100000 in debt when i finsh hopefully Ill make close to that per year when all is said and done and not be paying till i retire on my education.
