What is blogging?

Tagged:  •

This being my first blog here, I've decided to kick things off with a simple question: Why do we write blogs?

What is blogging? A means to change the world? A play for fame? A path to creative release? It serves all these functions, but none of them provide a definitive answer to our question.

Why would anyone care about our opinions? Will we really change anything by writing down what we believe for the rest of the world to know? We could write the most elaborate and sensible theses and have it completely ignored, or throw out the most casual and offhand comment and inspire a movement. Regardless of the end result, we wrote.

I believe that blogging, at its core, is an expression of free speech. The bill of rights guarantees us the right to express ourselves, to be heard, and I believe that this is something we all want deep down. We want to be able to say what we think about anything and everything, and what's the point in saying it if nobody can hear it?

With a newspaper, we can reach a city. On TV, whole nations can hear us. The internet though, now that is something different entirely. The whole world can hear us, or at least everyone who has access to the internet. With such a novel tool at our disposal, the question becomes not why blog, but why not blog? Blogging is the scratch to that proverbial itch that is the need to express oneself. So what if nobody wants to hear who you think has the best hair in hollywood or what kind of jelly is better? You want to say it, you can say, so you do say it! its as simple as that!

Blogs, and the internet in general actually, are the ultimate expression of free speech, the near fully realization of that dream of universal communication. In other words, they are the best way for anyone to talk about anything with everyone, a rather appealing concept for everyone who feels that itch to be heard.

Anywho, these are just some my idle ramblings. Hope anyone reading enjoys the thoughts, and thanks for helping me scratch my blogging itch. Later!

Honestly, I never thought I would blog before. But now I'm becoming addicted to it (I blame Progressive U). At the same time, I wish my message would reach more people. Perhaps they will become more aware of things around them. That is my purpose and motivation to keep on blogging. To spread the words and to inform other teenagers of how important their voices are.

Neither blogging, nor the internet are the ultimate form of free speech. Firstly, it excludes those who can not afford to access the internet. Some will say that libraries provide access, no they don't. The poorest have to work during the day, and the majority of libraries close during their off hours. Secondly, if you examine the discussions, even on forums like this, you see that they reflect a very narrrow point of view. It's mostly an example of the POV of those who have lived very priveleged, segregated lives, even in their own cities and towns. They never discuss the poverty in their own cities and towns. They never discuss the problems that face the majority of American citizens. If they ever talk about poverty, its rather exploitatively, revolving around the open borders policies the corporate elite support, which will only serve to profit the families of those same rich kids online.

One other thing, free speech isn't censored and banned, yet it is censored and banned even on "progressive" forums like this. Not because it's hate speech or anything like that, but because it's inconvenient to whatever the intent of those who control the forum in question.

There is no free speech if it's only "free' when it's popular or when it meets the approval of a forum owner. That is delusional. Free speech is only found in the real world, in environments that aren't for profit whether personal or agenda driven. Those who claim differently lie.

yet it is censored and banned even on "progressive" forums like this.

We only censor things that are hateful, libelous, etc. Alternatively, we will delete blogs that are plagiarized. If you don't have 100 words of original content, we won't accept your thoughts.

An author is fully free to delete his/her own blog. That's what happened to the discussion you were a part of... the author didn't think it was tracking with her blog, so she deleted the blog. That wasn't censoring by us.

If you feel you have been censored unjustly, feel free to contact us at info@progressiveu.org.

This site is the first time I've ever blogged. I am surprised to discover how fun it is. Some of the blogs I've started are my actual feelings on things. Some of my other blogs I started just to be outlandish and try to provoke people. I just want to start debate.
