Peter Pace, a top ranking military official, was slammed for critiquing the plea of homosexuals to be allowed to serve in the military. While he commented, citing his upbringing as the reasons for his beliefs, one would think that Pace would realize he speaks not only for his own personal feelings, but for the entire government as well. He was cited saying that "the military should not condone any act of immorality, and allowing openly gay soldiers to serve in the military would be allowing immorality in the military". He was also quoted stating that homosexuality was on the same level of immorality as adultery.
My understanding of the military makes me understand that adultery is punishable in military court as well in public court. But homosexuality is punishable only by discharge, dishonorable or honorable to be debated.
My question is, if Pace is going to punish one "immorality", why does he not critique any of the others that go unpunished in the military? Such as fornication, drinking, swearing, fighting, and the biggest of all: murder. Because while a military is necessary to protect our state of peace, killing enemies is still killing. And the military sometimes inducts criminals that have chosen to go into the military rather than serve a sentence in jail. How is this not immoral? To allow criminals into the military, but not homosexuals? Also, what does the military do about soldiers that come at as bisexual? Do they have a rule about that?
Personally, I don't believe that your preference in bed effects your ability to fight, and that you should be punished for what you have no control over. Though Pace has a right to feel that it is not right to let homosexuals serve, it was not a wise decision to not mention that his statement was not speaking for the entire U.S. military, and all of its subsidary branches. Not only will he drive people away from signing up, he set himself to be eaten alive by the press.

Being gay and in the millitary should not matter to the government, it just shows that the gay community will stand up for this country even when the country doesnt back them up. The government should look at it as one more proud american that is willing to die to save the lives we live.

1. the military punished drinking and driving very strongly. depending on the situation they can either be demoted, with their pay cut, and put on restriction, or sent to the brigg with dishonored discharge.
also,
how would you feel if you were on a frigget with all females and knew that 10 of them were gay, you had to share a shower with them, and had to sleep in the same quarters?? they have rules like that for a reason, i have no problem gays or les people, however it would make me unconformable if i came into my barracks room to see my shipmate having intercourse with another shipmate. it all comes down to the don;t ask don;t tell.
however one of my husbands shipmates did just recently come out, to his duty section and the captain has not punished him. the whole ship accepts him for who he is, i think it depends on how strict your c/o is. One of the sailors was a les in my dads section, and open about it, and no one cared either.
