This morning I heard about the big 7.9 magnitude quake that just slammed central China killing at least 10,000 people. Scary. I truly hope the victims of the hard-hit areas get the aid they need in this difficult time. It will be interesting to see what sorts of repercussions this could have for the impending summer Olympics. If people are afraid to come to China due to a number of reasons, now adding earthquakes to the list, I wonder if the Olympic fan turnout will suffer.
This earthquake came less than a week after another quake shook up Tokyo. 10 days ago another earthquake hit Indonesia. There have already been two typhoons (“typhoon season” doesn’t start until July) in the West Pacific, which have created some extreme wind on my island the past week. The volcanoes on my island (and in several other places around Asia) are going nuts. The earth is freaking out, and it’s causing some people to freak out, too.
What’s happening? Some people may go as far as saying, “it’s the beginning of the end of the world,” or “they are signs of the end times!” Others may say the earth is simply trying to keep itself in balance.
I say I don’t know what’s going on. I only hope I can make it through my years in Japan without being buried alive or crushed in a quake, roasted by a volcano, or drowned by a typhoon or tsunami.

I think it's just nature. We forget so easily that we still live in nature even if we pave over everything and put up a bunch of skyscrapers. Mother Earth is still down below and maybe sometimes she needs to come up for air...

That's true. Where in China are you located, by the way?
It's near the Yellow River where Chinese civilization began. And it's an hour from Shaolin Temple.

I bet there's some great history in that area!
I've studied the history of the earth since I was in elementary school. It was part of what got me into history to begin with. As I spent the last five years analysing how the climate changes humans and culture, this doesn't come as a surprise to me. This like this have happened every few decades in history, people just forget about things as soon as the trauma is over.
The sanity within is overwhelming.
I already see people forgetting after a couple of days. I choose not to forget the people of Sichuan. We must continue to think of them.

I haven't forgotten, but i agree that a lot of people have. . A lot of people that I work with are CHinese, and we have all been concerned about the people in that area. It seems like this event was not nearly as publicized as it should have been.
