A while back I was watching the Tyra Banks show and the topic of the day was anorexia and the media. I personally think that the media and the fashion industry plays a part in the way we as women think today. But, to me you can't use the fashion industry as a excuse. We are all human, we have a mind of our own, and we can think for ourselves. More and more young women today are dying from anorexia and bulimia. That should open our eyes also. The other day I saw a bulletin of this 26 year old french women that was 68 lbs. I seemed nasty. But most anorexia girls would call that cute. To me, your bones showing and having barely any meat on your bones, is disgusting and looks really unhealthy. I also think that all the girls that are anorexic do have problems and they should get help. They shouldn't be afraid to get help. If you do have anorexia talk to someone you feel close to. I promise you will feel a whole lot better.

I have to say I disagree on the role of the media. If that is all a girl sees or knows "skinny, skinny, skinny!", then she'll very obviously strive to be skinny. If there is something in the media that is making it attractive, she'll also get the wrong idea. Think about Britney Spears at the VMAs, she was called fat. She wasn't even normal, but for a star she was fat. Now millions of girls think that is what fat is.
Anorexia is a horrible disease that takes many lives, and even more time of people's lives. But downplaying the significance of things that cause it is not going to help anything.
It is easier said then done. If you were in the shoes of an anorexic you would see that to them, it isn't a disease. It something they have to do. So getting help is definitely out of the question. Even if they do know it is a disease, they don't want to get help.
It is a problem, but should be addressed delicately. Not by just telling them to stop. It is a mental and emotional disease.
I want to look like one...One day, I will accomplish it. It's a battle of willpower and need...I want to conquer my body. I have lost more than 10 lbs. this week...I have battled this from 10 on, I am 21...It never goes away and it's something that no one ever understands. It's a lifestyle, so cast those stones.
The thing is, if it wasn't for the media, why would girls even have the need or want to become skinner? All of todays ads for clothing, make up, etc, have a beautiful, skinny girl in them. You can't turn on the television or read a newspaper or magazine without seeing a skinny woman. Girls and teenagers want to look like that, and see that starving themselves is a quick and easy way. Girls in the 1800's and early 1900's didn't have this problem since the media wasn't such a bit part of their life.
I do agree that they should get help though because it is unhealthy and guys don't like girls really really skinny.
It's not that easy to just talk to someone and "feel better"
This disease can literally take over your life and even extensive treatment doesn't work. A lot of anorexics do not want help, myself included. I didn't choose this, but I am choosing to keep it because it works, because I am literally addicted to the stupid disease. The media and fashion industry do not start eating disorders, they just make it more difficult to recover once you have one. None of us care if you think our bodies are discusting or not. We are never going to see it that way. And also, I know I am skinny, but it's just that it's never enough, I can always lose more. I don't look in the mirror and see someone obese, I see someone who is not yet perfect.
