This is a rant that both my parents and my friends have heart many, many times. If you spend any time with me at all, you will quickly learn that while I am not the most grammatically correct person, I am the English-friendliest. I love everything about English, languages, and words in general.
"All my life I've looked at words as if I'm seeing them for the first time."- Ernest Hemingway
I feel the same way. Words are such wonderful things, yet in our world and educational system, they are placed below the facts of science and the numbers of math.
I know that living in a technological advanced age, math and science are important. However, they should not be placed on a pedestal above any other subject.
Take for example what is happening in my school. Now, it is required that you take 3 years of math, 3 years of science, 4 years of English, and 4 years of History. Now, there are a great variety of maths or sciences you can take- physics,Intergrated Physics and Chemistry, biology, chemistry, Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Cal, Calculus, Chemistry 2, Biology 2, College Biology, etc. How many English classes are offered? English 1, 2, 3, and 4, or if you really want to, your Senior year you can take the College English class. This hardly seems like a balanced scale to me.
Also, the other day I was filling out a survey our school was making us do about college-prep. Under "Intended Major", not a single English-type major was listed such as English, Literature, or Creative Writing.
I know science and math is important, and that's great that we are slowly understanding the world that we live in. But what's the point in understanding it if all our culture is slowly dying due to the deceased rate of poets, authors, and playwrights?

I see both sides.
I also love language, but science and math are what makes the world go round. On the other hand, we couldn't communicate what we've learned without language. They need each other! So...go well-rounded students!!!
i agree! i love english! but i have not been challenged enough! and its frustrating because unless i want to go into journalism, its hard to know how i can use my creative writing skills. ugh!
Yeah, I love English and Creative Writing, Literature, everything, but it seems the only career option is journalism, which really doesn't appeal to me.

I personally think science and math are more important. I absolutely detest english. I hate interperting the deeper meaning of literature. I realize there is some merit to it, but overall, I tend to find it tedious and pointless. Knowing what literary term is present in an essay is not going to help me in life whatsoever, while math and science will help me a great deal (especially in my career goal, but even so)
Well, let's agree to disagree then. I think they are generally equally important, and should be treated that way- such as having elective english classes as well as science and math.
Personally, anything besides basic math and science will not help me in my career goal, while English will, and you are opposite.

I love English and plan to major in Literature, but I also really enjoy my Physics class. I agree that all areas of study should be balanced. My high school requires four years of both Math and English, but there really wasn't much choice until 12th grade. And even then, Math still has more options.
and i know this for a fact, our sciences and maths are going way down, but at the same time-- I know english is important BUT people opt to not even care about science and math (they are a little harder), which is why we have this job of trying to show students how important these subjects are

You need English for every subject, so you can coherently express your points. Doesn't work so much the other way around though.
I probably have some homework to do now.
english and learned different styles of english writing in EVERY course, that's what i feel, especially my science texts are all about a different style of writing, just english with a lot of science related vocabulary and ideas..
