I'll never forget the hot summer day, when I was barely 16, that I sat by the ocean listening to the world change.
Previous to that summer, I never thought that the ocean was relaxing. I thought it was complete tourist trap with thousands of people flocking to the ocean, with the pesky seagulls, and little children screaming for there Caprisun juice box and goldfish, while the mother sits on her white towel with a Cosmopolitian magazine, and her blackberry.
Before this day, I wasn't really listening to the waves, I was just watching them, and the people that were enjoying the atmosphere.
As the day went on, the sun was becoming more intense it became more relaxing to just sit there and explore my mind.
I couldn't tell you want I was thinking, or even who I was with that day.
What I will always remember is the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks and the feeling that
I am very small compared to this big world that I have in front of me.
"Three things have been difficult to tame: the oceans, fools and women. We may soon be able to tame the oceans; fools and women will take a little longer." Spiro T. Agnew

My partner and I visited her birthplace in Rhode Island two springs ago. We went to the beach a couple of days before the beaches officially opened. It was sunny, but cool, and it was completely deserted! I loved it. We sat on the rocks and listened to the waves. We wrote in the sand and found Quohog shells.
We went back the day the beach opened. It was no warmer than the first time we were there, but this time, it was exactly the zoo you described! Yuck! Teenagers sunbathing in bikinis in temperatures barely hovering around 60 degrees! Parents ignoring their children, children getting in the way of surfers...chaos!
Thanks for writing this! It was nice to remember that trip.

What made you start listening to the change? Is listening more valuable than watching?
Just curious
i'd say that listening definately is not as important as watching, but listening is much more important.
you can watch people, life from far away your whole life and learn nothing
but listening and learning you'll learn forever!
