The unthinkable has happened in this election. There is a black man and a woman running, John McCain got the nomination he could not get when he was eight years younger and the most credible candidates in both major parties are no longer contenders in the upcoming presidential election. Despite all of this, no one would have expected Monica Lewinsky to endorse Hillary Clinton!
.....And she did not, nor will she as far as I know. But the point is that although much of the previously unthinkable has taken place during this election, much will still remain the same. Everybody seems very focused on the decline of the Bush Administration and the wonderful shift we can expect upon its conclusion. But we shouldn't.....
I'll be the first to say that George W. Bush is a horrible man and a miserable president. I know all about the Project for a New American Century and that if September 11th never happened, he still probably would have sucked. But if we evaluate the circumstances from a neutral position, he was just another president.
Presidents start unjust wars that are in turn unpopular. Half the country hates them at the very least. They all provide tax cuts for the rich, shaft the poor and expand the liberty of large corporate conglomerates. In that sense, Bush was just another guy.
So too will Obama or Clinton or McCain. Because even though you can't logically fight a "war on terrorism," they have all embraced the concept. Everything Bush wanted, he has set. There won't be that much change.
No, Monica Lewinsky will not endorse Hillary Clinton and Jeremiah Wright will not become president anytime soon. That's progress, and that inevitably makes it too much for American society. Because when it all comes down to it, we as a nation are comfortable with a president who has flaws, we like to pretend that we would do a better job and we like a president who makes our own lives better at the expense of others. That is what we call Americanism in a nutshell.
