Yesterday i was reading this Honolulu Magazine on the internet, because i like Hawaii and i was looking through their past archives and i came across this article from a Doctor that made a study and found that with a few changes in our life style people can live longer. Well obviously we can live longer if we change our habits.
Well this Honolulu Magazine wrote about the Okinawa people from the Hawaiian Islands that seemed to live a lot longer than any other ethnicity. In and around the Hawaiian Islands there is a population around 1.2 million. Amongst the 1.2 million there are 263,000 people who live to be older than 60 years old. Okinawans hold the record ,50 out of 100,000 live to be older than 60 ,for example in 2005 a Honolulu resident died at age 112.
There are 5 main reasons why they live so long;Diet, Psycho spirituality, Exercise, Sociality , and Sense of Purpose.
As tradition they enjoy eating sweet potatoes instead of rice and bread. Unlike rice and bread sweet potatoes are not high in Carbohydrate content. They eat meat with little or no fat, soy and tend to under eat rather than get full.
They also enjoy eating seafood; raw fish like ‘ahi’ is proven to help prevent strokes, as well as Omega 3, which is a blood thinner and anticoagulant and prevents blood clots and strokes. Okinawans believe in a religious philosophy that females can be priestesses. Okinawans that live to be 100 years old believe in this very much, their religion is very important to them.
They exercise every day and when possible. They also tend to be very close to their families as a strong support group, especially to the elderly. People who live long have ‘ikiga’, a strong sense of enjoyment in what they do as a reason to keep living. There are also people who are known as ‘tagay’, people who are always happy and never get mad (happy-go-lucky people).
any one for the challenge?
