“What I Look for in Paintings”

When I look at paintings, I use my aesthetic judgment in choosing which ones I like and which ones I don’t like.  I like paintings that look real whether the subject is realistic or something from fantasy.  I like clear paintings – ones that you can see; not the blurry, one-thing-blending-into-another kind of thing.  I like paintings that have a lot of detail, but no so much that it makes you dizzy to look at.  Some of the paintings I like show depth like “King George” who is on horseback and fighting a dragon.  The list could go on and on!

Yeah, I like realism paintings too. But some viewers and artists prefer more impressionistic and abstract art. Like Pablo Picasso--he could paint even the most difficult objects in photo-like realism practically in his sleep. He went to abstract and cubist art to pursue what he thought was more challenging than realism, though to the viewer, his child-like lines and shapes in paintings like Guernica seem to be a step backward.
