Filibuster

As is obvious due to the poll over to the right hand margin of the screen, there is an issue today about the usefulness of the so called “filibuster” in which a member of the Senate talks for hours or even days on end about a bill, continually going off on useless tangents to distract people from voting on the bill. While I read the comments on it, it became clear that many believe a filibuster is a way or representing the will of the minority and bringing it on par with the will of the majority. While it could be shown in a good light, a representative democracy is not the type of government wanted if you wish the will of the few to be equal to the will of the many. The entire purpose of our government is to steer the nation towards the will of the many, and not just the few. This isn’t just against racial minority groups, but against ANY minority groups. While it would be wrong for them to be taken advantage of, something that the majority agrees on should not be blocked by the words of a single senator, or the minority party. In addition to giving the minority groups perhaps too much power, it also slows down an already extremely inefficient government, something we need to stop propagating.

Great blog. I appreciate that someone wrote a blog about this since it directly relates to the poll on the right and that not many people no what a filibuster is. I vaguely remembered the term but now refreshed in it's meaning. I agree with your view on the majority VS the minority.

"The entire purpose of our government is to steer the nation towards the will of the many, and not just the few."

I completely agree. Even though I feel that the minority should be able to voice their opinions and have their own say in things, the majority overall rules.
