I'm sure that everyday you watch television, you cannot go without seeing at least one form of killing. blood, fight, or cussing. It never used to be this way. People could get humor through just stupid stuff, like smacking someone in the face with a cream pie. But now it just seems like all I see is bullying, guns, and crimes. I personally don't like the degrading terms that are used on television or in anything for that matter, but it's supposedly what the people want.
Yes, I do believe in the freedom of speech, so I don't think that we should have to take violence off of televison. But I do think that parents should closely monitor what their children are watching throughout the years. It just doesn't seem right to let a seven year old watch a sex scene or a rated R movie. Hence why the V-chip was invented. But besides that thought, businesses preventing violence can only do so much to stop it. The parents are the overall authority and determine whether a program is right for a child or not.
Even toys are often weapons today. Kids learn to play with swords and toy guns. Some take it too literally, and others can play just fine, knowing that in real life those things are bad and could seriously hurt someone. But there are accidents that occur and a child accidently kills another child because they thought the real gun was not real or that the knife was just for play. Once again, this comes back to the parents.
I don't know what is going to make people realize that bad things can happen from being exposed to violence, but something has got to be done. It's the parents responsibility and they should fully enforce consequences. The media should not have to take everything out of their programs, but I think degrading language should definitely be edited out, just for the sake of being respectful.

You're concerned about it. Good for you. That's your right in the US, since you have free speech protected by the constitution.
Protecting children is a legitimate concern, and it should be up to the parents to make sure their children don't watch anything inappropriate.
However, studies have shown that societies with liberal regulations on violence and pornography in the media experience lower rates of violent and sexual crimes. I think that's an important factor to consider.
As for foul language, what's the big deal? Why should television and radio stations take out rude content unless they willingly choose to? Those who don't like it don't have to listen to or watch it. It's not like someone is swearing around you on purpose to rile you up.
I do agree that there is way too much sex and violence in the media these days. I have a 3 year old sister and there is ususally NOTHING we can watch on tv together. We have been getting lots of use out of all of the Barney tapes my mom bought her. I thought my mom was crazy when she bought like 20 Barney tapes on Ebay - but now I know why. I hope she saves those tapes for when I have kids!!!!
I was never allowed to point toy guns at people, house rule. It was a part of learning respect for the object. It's something that everyone needs to have. Something I think children should be taught at a young age. I worked at summer camp last year and the children had absolutely no concept as to what it was they were playing games with. That kind of thing is just sad.
The government has no right to tell people what they can and cannot watch or read, I'm against censorship. But parents minding their children more would solve a great deal of problems in this country, wouldn't it?
