Dolphin Rights

Tagged:  •

So at the World Affairs Seminar, one particular girl and I got into quite a debate about the extension of human rights to animals, particularily dolphins because they have been shown to communicate with eachother.

She couldn't see the idea that we have enough to worry about just with humans, so I told her:

If the dolphins wants rights, they can vote.

Or something along those lines.

Anyways, if caring people like that just put their energies in a useful direction, the world would really benefit.

I actually wrote a paper on how the government does not give a crap about the rights of oceanic creatures and they keep on lowering their sonar radars, which has led to the HIGHEST deaths in dolphins and whales, because of what the sonar does to their brains. I need to find the article that I used for my paper. You'd like it.

Yes, we have enough on our plate worrying about issues relating to humans only, but I believe that it's still important to secure human rights for all animals. After all, what kind of world would we be leaving for our children if we've driven all the animals to extinction?

First of all, animals cannot have "human rites." They are not human.

Animal rites can be important, yes. We do not want to destroy every living thing besides humans. However, even though dolphins seem to be progressing, they are not equal to humans, and never will be. While we may need to protect them, dolphins do not need rites because humans have control over them. Of course, I believe God created Man as the head over all creation, and I'm sure you would never agree with that.

I'm sure I would like that article.

And I'm certainly for environmental protection and animal rights, but this girl was taking it much further than that.

In fairness to that girl, though, dolphins are developing sentience and the human race, for the most part, does not respect that.

In fairness to the girl, I will agree. Still, this girl pretty much wanted a dolphin equivalent of the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights." I'm pretty sure the UN has enough to worry about right now.

Dolphins should have some rights. They should be protected in a way. sometimes we forget that we are animals too. Sure they should not have as many rights as us. But they should have the right to not be killed by us.
