Nuclear Progress

I hope the recent move by President Nicolas Sarkozy is taken as seriously as it should be by all the countries of the world. He announced he will be reducing the nuclear warheads in his country to below a total count of 300. Less than 1/2 of what France had during the height of the Cold War. He also disclosed none of their weapons are aimed at any country in particular. This disclosure is meant to open the conversation amongst all nations as to be open about the number of warheads they currently have.

Eliminating such deadly weapons begins a long road to recovery and hopefully an eventual end to war. People will never all agree or get along, but we can all seem to agree that no country is looking for a nuclear holocaust. If we could remove this threat as a whole, maybe more people would be willing to talk about reasonable options to their problems.

With violence spreading like fire throughout the world, someone has to make the first step in attempting to put an end to the killing. Kudos to France for stepping forward and refusing to be a part of the problem anymore. Kudos to them for trying to make the world talk about ways of getting out of the hole we have put ourselves in.

I understand wanting to protect ourselves against a nuclear threat, but if we ever want to remove the threat it will only happen with the destruction of such weapons. The people most likely to use those weapons have no concern for the consequences. They have no concern for the current planet. They are kamikazee type men who really do not care if we have something to reciprocate with or not. I hope the US follows France and begins to put the weapons away.

I do agree with you about nuclear warheads and the such...but I think having some nuclear power is extremely important...we have it and have had to use it in severe emergencies to save us...and I think other countries deserve the same options...as long as they are used responsibly...but thumb's up to France for taking the first step in potentially making the world safer

I agree...nuclear energy is important...I am simply talking about nuclear warheads and using threats of damage to try to keep people in line. A very valid thought concerning the importance of power.

yeah and I agree with that fact...it is being done..way too much...and it won't take much for the power to get into the wrong hands and the threats will be more than just empty idle ones...

The first move of any sane president who gets inaugurated next January should be to similarly reduce the US's stocks of nuclear weapons. Preferably to zero. All they do is heighten tensions. Further heightened tensions in a world already on edge are not a good thing.

I do agree that we should follow suit and reduce our supply...but definitely not to zero...we are a part of the IAEA and non-proliferation treaties that involve countries like Iran and North Korea...if we completely get rid of our nukes we have no more say in these things...that means that the dangerous weapons could easily and quickly get into the hands of dangerous countries without us being able to do anything about it

And our having nuclear weapons helps us do stuff about dangerous countries with dangerous weapons how, exactly?

well obviously there's the threat...but what I meant by it was that if we got rid of our nukes we would be cut from the non-proliferation treaty and the IAEA (programs we generally uphold) leaving them up to countries like North Korea and Iran
