Yo deseo... / I wish...

At first glance, I’m your typical white girl. I live in a small, mostly white town. My parents make enough money for us to live a comfortable lifestyle. I’m pretty short, with blonde hair and green eyes, and I look just like my momma. Yep, I’m your average American white girl…

…Except I’m Chicana.

What’s the difference between Chicano and Mexican? Well, what I’ve gathered is that it’s a personal choice, but I’ve also been told that Chicanos are born in the US, and Mexicans were born in México. Personally, I refer to myself both ways (which confuses the heck out of my friends, let me tell you).

Yo hablo español, pero yo he perdido fluidez.

I speak Spanish, but I’m not as fluent as I once was. I learned it right alongside English, but forgot it when I got older (thankfully, my Spanish classes are forcing me to remember). I consider both of them my native languages.

No, I didn’t have a quinceañera, but I also didn’t have a Sweet Sixteen.

Nunca he inducí nadie a creerlo, y no lo haré.

I’m not 100% Chicana (I have European blood in me as well), and that makes a lot of people angry. How dare I claim to be something I’m “not”! I’ve never claimed to be totally Mexican, and I never will.

Likewise, now that it’s fashionable to be Latino, those who laughed at me when I checked the “Hispanic” box on the questionnaires, call me a poser and accuse me of trying to be cool. Uh, I was the first person in my grade to openly accept my background. I find it ironic that a majority of the kids at my school who now identify themselves as Latino are the same people who said before that they weren’t at all. I have nothing against them accepting their roots; I actually applaud it. I just wish that they would realize that not every person who is Latino looks like the stereotype.

Pleaseohplease critique my Spanish! Like I said, I'm relearning, so it's much appreciated. I've littered Chicano slang throughout this though, like "baro" (money) and "güero" (white person), and a lot of my words come from my Spanish classes, which have tended to mesh together slangish words from the different Spanish-speaking countries.

Awesome blog! It's so true that you can't just stereotype people simply by the way they look or the little you know.

I think a lot of people accept their minority based roots because it helps with college admissions and scholarships. It's nice to see that you're someone who actually embrases your background and culture out of pride rather than personal gain.

Well, scholarships never hurt anyone... *wink* I've applied for scholarships within my European ethnicities as well as Chicano/Mexican/Latino ones. I'm an equal opportunist.

What is a Chicana?

If you can't see that video, click here WHAT IS A CHICANA FELIZ?

A CHICAN@ is someone Happy to be both. Chicanos are not about Hatred, so claiming to be a Chicano, doesn't mean that you Hate others because you love yourself for being both?

Just because you love, doesn't mean you hate too!

Does that make sense?

Ok, let me start over.

My blood is Portuguese and Yaqui Native American. I don't use the term Indian unless I am forced to by say, "the Museum of the American Indian." However, I think of it as indigenous not as a derrogative term as most "Mexicans" or latinos like to use.

I don't hate anyone, but I certainly have my dislikes. For instance, I can't stand any kind of Latino that looks into the mirror and says, "Wow, I think I need plastic surgery because look at my huge "indian" nose!"

Latinos have a lot of issues stemming from colonization.

What do I mean by Colonization, I mean the effects that happened to Meso-America post-Christopher columbus.

Whether you hate yourself or not, that's another issue.

Personally, I'm happy with all my indigenous and european and basically, Mestizo features and I don't complain when my nose looks wider as I get closer to the mirror.

Best,
z

I don't understand why, because I identify myself using a word, it means that I automatically hate everyone else. Just because, for example, one Latino hates white people, doesn't mean that everyone who identifies his- or herself as Latino does. Bi-(tri., etc)-racial children can refer to themselves as either of their races without hating.

I wrote this blog mainly to disprove the stereotypes. I would appreciate if you took that into account.
