Why, in the Richest nation...

The Coachella Valley is home to thousands of homeless. Organizations such as Martha’s Kitchen, The Well In The Desert, Food In Need Of Distribution , Food Not Bombs and many others help support these less fortunate people. I have worked with the homeless for a few years and I know some of them are really there because of addiction, because of themselves and no one else. But others are victims of PTSD or economic troubles due to our current economic state. If anyone on here has seen Into the Wild ( or read it ), there is a scene where they visit “slab city.” That area is littered with huts built by migrant workers and their families. Many of the washes, built to prevent flooding, are inhabited by whole communities of homeless. I have had the pleasure of meeting very well educated homeless men with amazing life stories, whom I give the utmost respect. The excessive drug use in the high desert drives a lot of young people out of their homes. The valley has so many people who spend their money on meaningless things , its sad to see people not being able to help each other. Why should anyone in our country live that way?

... that people don't make more of a concerted effort to help one another. It's especially hard to understand when you see extremely wealthy areas, yet the wealthiest tend to ignore the "little people". There could be any number of reasons/causes for their behavior, but that doesn't really excuse the willful ignorance of a negative situation going on right outside your front door.

I can't really say much as I've never volunteered at a homeless shelter, but then I've never lived in an area where homelessness was a problem - at least not at a time when I would have been aware of the issue.

Good blog :).

yes you brought up a good point in your comment that I forgot to ask about in my blog. I was wondering what the state of the homeless in other people's communities is like?

Why were these people not helping themselves?

It would depend on the circumstances I imagine. There are plenty of well-educated people out there who can't find a job that pays them well. Couple that with bills, mortgages, kids, divorces, unexpected trips to hospitals, mental illness, addictions and a host of other problems that can plague an individual and you have a chance of becoming homeless. Not to mention, there are plenty of folks out there who are highly intelligent, but lack the education and degrees necessary to get those high paying jobs. You just really have to take a closer look...

But you quit too soon. It seems like each sentence in the blog is the thesis statement of its own paragraph, but then no paragraph follows. I'd like it if you went into more detail and added a little research and background information about the area. It's an interesting topic.

Sorry to get all English teachery on you. I do that sometimes, but I only bother with the blogs I like!
