Why hire if you can't give hours?

I absolutely hate it when jobs go on a hiring spree, because no matter what job they always seem to over hire and then have to cut hours.

I had to deal with this when I got hired at EB Games last year. I was hired into a seasonal position for Christmas. So, I knew a little to what to expect. But, I had no idea that for the entire 4 months that I was hired that I would only work a total of 20 hours. I most of have 2 days of training, worked Christmas Eve, then worked a day after that before they decided to end the seasonal help. I honestly thought since they expected to be so busy with Wii's release that they'd give a little more hours???

Talking to full time staff there, I found out that the company gives them a certain amount of hours to give to seasonal help. Well, apparantly they get bonus points for not using up all the hours. So, why bother hiring like 7 new people, like they did, if you don't want to give us hours? I ended up keeping the job, obviously. They threw me out the first chance they got.

It's happened to me a few times after that. At Mrs. Fields, which is a cookie stand at most malls, they were hiring a bunch of people. So, I applied and got hired as a shift manager. Well, they only worked me 2 days and then dropped me off the schedule. My friend told me they hire people and then keep them off the schedule before eventually taking them off the payroll. Again, what's the point of hiring at all?

Now, I work at the bookstore at my school and it's the same hassel all over again. They hired about 6 students for the big rush for fall books. I have to admit they were not selfish with hours when there were people lined up to the back of the store.

When they started cutting my hours down to 12 a week, I asked about getting more. The manager who deals with scheduling said I could work no more than 25 and had no problem putting at 22. The boss higher than her came in after she gave everyone the schedules with their desired hours and such and decided to revise it. He cut my hours down to 12 a week. And, I'm scheduled like right after my class so I have 5 minutes to walk across campus from my class to get to work on time.

Alot of us got down talked about this revision. I was one of the ones who was mad, because I was told I could have at least 20. Apparantly they do this every semester. They over hire and cut hours, instead of not hiring much and giving the hours to the people who want and need them.

I don't mind he cut hours... it's his job. He's looking into the schools massive budget and trying to save dimes and quarters. Plus the big rush is done for until January. I honestly wish they gave me warning when I got hired. So now, I have to put applications or look on campus for a second job, because I have bills that aren't going to get paid.

They typically need baristas.

I recommend staying out of retail in general, especially around this time of year. Yes, I know, it's only September, but this is when they start hiring seasonals and all that. I recommend, especially if you're a decent ways into your schooling, to check with career services and/or look for a job that applies the skills you're training to do. Paid internships and whatnot are a good way to get your foot in the door as well as pay the bills.

You can try Radio Shack. The only thing with them is that they want you to be flexible. Well its hard to do that when you are a student. But try them or try Target.

That's weird, I worked at a grocery store that hired like every teenager who applied, and then put us all on 20 hour weeks, and even if you asked them to cut down, they would put like 16 hours. I had to quit because I had no free time ever... And seriously, there were at least 40 people working there only on the cash registers.

I worked at Kroger and I can understand that. They will never have enough help. Big chain stores tend to be like that, but they are hard to get hired into.

It is so difficult to find work these days, expecially when you're in school. Maybe you can do something like yard work for people on the side? That way, if you have the time, you can take on more yards.

Do you only apply for temporary positions? I know everyone bashes it, but try working in food. If you were to get a good waiting or bartending job, you could work 1-2 days per week and probably make more than you would on a full minimum wage workweek.

I wish someone trained in management where here to explain this phenomenon. I know it happens nearly everywhere, but it is difficult to manage for many people. Especially when they need the money and jobs are scarce.

I used to work for a clothing company that did that... what's worse was that I had "Call-in" hours, which means that I have to call in that day (few hours before work) to see if I have to go in...
