Because I Say So or Why Everyone Is Wrong

This is the beginning of a trend my friends. No, it not the latest fad in hair accessories, nor is it the downward spiral of the ever changing economy. In fact this particular trend is happening right in front of our eyes, and it is my opinion that as a site and community we need to help lessen it until it escapes into oblivion.

How do these titles strike you?

"You Need to Stop Smoking"
"Drinking is the Last Thing to Make you Cool"
"People Who Are Pro-Choice are Pro-Death"

These are obviously just a few of the examples and are all paraphrased from taglines that have become very popular as of...well today. Unfortunately I believe this is because of a particular starting time that coincidentally happened today as well. This disturbs me.

You see, I started blogging on ProgressiveU around two months ago, which was apparently just at the end of the last scholarship competition. Because of that most of the blogs I have been exposed to have been very well written from individuals who blog not for money but for change and developing opinions. Suddenly I got on today and the entire new blog list is filled with "Your Opinion is Wrong" posts.

Well, since everyone else has been doing this here is my two cents: No one can be wrong on an opinion. Smoking may be wrong to you, but luckily we are still allowed to make that decision for ourselves. Drinking may have side affects you don't agree with, but someone else might enjoy those aspects. You can side with one opinion, but there is fence and another field and there will be someone on the other side. Welcome to life.

All I ask the bloggers here to consider is this: Everyone is entitled to their opinion. When you tag your piece, be a little creative. Title it to be invoking, inviting, and entertaining. People are more likely to read your blog if they aren't so offended from the tagline. A smoker is not going to click on something that clearly states the writer things they are trash. Make people wonder what you think so they have to click to know.

Think about it...

"Your opinion is wrong"? An opinion can never be wrong, per se. It can be terribly misguided and ill-informed, but it can't be wrong. Ewww, annoying.

Wonderful - I found this site just as the scholarship thing began. At least I'll have plenty to yell at people for :P

No worries, it does get better and if you stick around after the contest it is a blast. You will quickly be able to identify the good blogs versus the not-so-good ones by tagline, author, and the first sentence of the post.

Welcome to the community!
