I was in Winter Guard class the other day and our coach was telling us how Band and Color is and has been on the chopping block for many years and our Guard class will probably not exist next year. I was in shock that they would even consider cutting the Band program (for people who are not part of Band, Color and Winter Guard are part of that same program we are a family). First off the Band and Color Guard pays for almost everything. It costs 1000$ minimum a year to be in this program. Plus people involved in Band and Color Guard usually make up the top ten percentile of the school grade wise. It is a proven fact that people who play an instrument and are involved in activities usually do better in school than just regular students. We all work together. If Color Guard class is cut than we can not have a color guard because a new rule was instated that if you do not have a class you can not compete. So if color guard is cut than we can not have a marching band. If we have no marching band than in time we will not have a band. Another bad thing is orchestra will probably be the first to be cut. I think it is wrong to deny children from doing something that most love doing espeshally since they have kept going until high school. Being in Band, Guard, and Orchestra is more than just High School. It is depressing to think how the music program is dwindling because it is an awesome program even if it is not appreciated by most high schoolers. I really do not think that schools are thinking about students futures when they cut music programs. They are cutting future jobs from people. The music buisness is already dwindling they dont need to make it worse. We are not even a bad band. We are considered one of the best bands in the world. Our teachers and coaches are really important people in the buisness. It makes me depressed just thinking about it

As much as I think the arts are an essential part of a solid education, if something needs to be cut, I think it's better color guard than algebra. We definately need an economic reform, but until then, we don't have enough money for all the classes we need, so something has to go.
