I love political doublespeak. And when I say love, I mean it with a considerable amount of fright and agony.
We need answers from Gonzales about warrantless spying. All he is willing to offer is "this program" and dodges so that he can go through and deny them later. Are there other unleaked illegal spying programs?
And how about the necesity of Bush's "fast" spying to fend off the terrorists and keep us lucky Americans safe?

99.8% rate of failure? Geeee ummm, that sounds pretty bad. That means that 99.8% of people they were watching were doing nothing wrong. This is not probable cause. Bush STILL expects us to believe that they DO have probable cause for these terrorists even when they can't prove any legitimate success rate? If they were REALLY hunting terrorists, they could get better accuracy by throwing a phone book across the room and rolling die to select a name to research!
Who else thinks they aren't REALLY hunting terrorists? Who else thinks they are trying to excersize control over the American people? To sow fear, of terrorists who might escape the governments ever watchful eye, and of ordinary people who have COUGHT it.
The NSA official who gave us those accuracy numbers did us a great favor, but we have a LONG way to go in assessing the damage that has been caused by this executive overreach.

Oh my =O running a country's terror watching on a system about as probable as some quantum chemical changes, such as a ball gathering in energy to jump off the floor. Why is this the land of the free again?
You want to be told how we are wire tapping terrorists? That would be a very bad idea. That information would aid the enemy. Seeing that you link to daily KOS shows that you are a Democrat. I give you this warning attacking the president on the wire tapping makes your party look weak on defense, and could give Republicans seats in congress.
Kos is a democrat? HOLY CRAP! I thought he was a blog!
I hope you have a day job. The Dims and Repukes are just one party- the business party according to Chomsky.
As horrible and awful a president Bill Clinton was, he did manage to keep the United States out of an idiotic war with Iraq. The Project for a New American Century proposed their idea of pre-emptive war with Iraq to Clinton in 1998 and Clinton (fortunately and rightly) rejected it.
As for the similarities between the two parties (or between the two presidents Clinton and Bu$h) CLINTON LEFT OFFICE WITH TWO YEARS OF BUDGET SURPLUSES. In four years Bush has managed to destroy the sound budget policies that Clinton had left and the country will be in the red for at least a decade. Bush has returned to the reckless and stupid spending policies of Reagan and the 1980's with huge budget deficits, massive borrowing by the Feds and and NO MONEY for domestic spending - roads, schools, students loans, Medicare, Medicaid or for disaster assistance after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
I love how you say Clinton was a horrible president (based probably on the lewinsky thing) but everything he did for the country was positive. I just dont understand some people in this country.
Everything he did FOR THE COUNTRY was positive. I have no interest in his personal life, or his affairs, but that is the personal attack that his presidency has been reduced to. Just because they may not like him as a person does not mean that he was a horrible president.
Doesn't the country stand by free will as long as it doesnt impede the free will of another? So why is Clinton's great presidency, truly the greatest since the Kennedy administarion, be defined by something done out of his own free will?
supercoolyellow, please stop watching FOX News. They lie. Constantly. NO ONE wants to know how we are wiretapping terrorists. That is a LIE. A bold-faced LIE. You are being LIED TO.
The FISA Law states that you CANNOT wiretapp without a warrant, and the President authorized wiretapping WITHOUT A WARRANT. Doing it WITH a warrant IS FINE AND WE WANT TERRORISTS WIRETAPPED USING LEGAL MEANS. Doing it WITHOUT a warrant is ILLEGAL AND A FELONY WHICH QUALIFIES THE PRESIDENT FOR IMPEACHMENT. Our Constitution MEANS NOTHING if we violate it to catch terrorists. We can catch Terrorists *AND* obey the law AT THE SAME TIME. Apparently, Republicans CANNOT.
Get a clue.
There is and has been a perfectly legal means of getting wiretapping authority for some time. Deliberately circumventing the law to do it SHOULD make people suspicious.
Am I to assume that if a Democratic administration had done the same thing you would've been fine with it?
I wouldn't have. But, then again, I believe the law should apply equally to both political parties.
Good point! So the next president who i'm sure will be democratic based on all this corruption, is going to be allowed to wiretap freely after bush leaves office.
something tells me the yellow-folk aren't gonna like it when the shoe is on the other foot.
Democrats (and many Republicans) want the FISA judges informed-- in secret-- how wiretapping by NSA and others is being conducted. This is consistent with maintaining secrecy of monitoring-- and it is also required by the law.
No one objects to wiretapping to protect national security, but it must be done within the law-- which is VERY lax and which should accommodate all the legitimate needs of the NSA.
supercoolyellow,
And you must not be aware that all of the intelligence that would have led to capturing some of the Al Qaeda hijackers was collected legally (ie., without illegal wiretapping). The issue was not gathering the intelligence. It was interpreting it and putting it together.
Giving away your civil liberties to maintain a false sense of security is never wise.
Go get educated before you comment again!!
You guys all make excellent points! I would have responded sooner except that today has been a remarkably busy day classwise.
We NEED to make suer we are obeying our laws even when protecting ourselfs from terrorists. Otherwise there is only anarchy or fascism.
Why should the government have any right to wiretap anyone without the consent od the people. That the CIA does this to other countries is enough to scare me.
