I want to go back when the busiest part of my day was learning how to cut with scissors. When my boyfriend of the day was Rodney because gave me a pack of Skittles or when we pass notes in school where you could check yes or check no. Where the only time you heard the word hoe was once a year when Santa said so. I want to go back when my best friend Erica didn't know that she was white and I was black. I want to go way back when it was cool to have a fanny pack. What about when we collected allowances instead of bills. When we didn't even worry about our next meal. I liked when weed was the ugly dandelions that grew out back. We used to laugh and laugh because when old Miss Lucy cut them she would cuss because the next day it seemed like they were back. I need a whiff of the days when it was ok to kiss on the cheek and we didn't have to have sex today because it only had been a week. I loved when it was ok to play hide n seek. We would run after each other until we could no longer speak. I want to go back to dinners with the family at the same table, at the same time. I want to go back to before when my destiny was all mine. I just wish on some days I could go back in time. I mean truly not just in my mind. I wouldn't change the outcome. I would be to entranced with the feeling of innocence, naivete and the infectious stability. Just to feel the way I did when when it was okay to always be silly. When it was just fine to not know what it is like to be your own worst enemy. I said I want to go way back when dreams were not just distant memories. I want to go back.......

I'm kidding. Your post made me realize what a charmed life I lead, so thank you. I'm a nanny, and much of my day is spent as you described. I get to be silly, get kisses on the cheek with no strings attached, eat as a family, and pick dandelions, which are NOT ugly! They're beautiful! Especially when the bouquet was picked by a five-year-old.
I love my job!

I am glad. I have two beautiful children of my own. You are right nothing is ugly if it is given to you by a 5 year old, not even chewed gum. I love who I am but sometimes I wish I could be free like back then. You are right, you have a great job.

I feel the same way every time I get the mail. Bills bills bills. It's hard to feel silly when the mortgage needs paying.

Oh the memories...
your blog inspired me to remember the good times i used to have. The best time of my life was when i was five. I had no problems. I didn't know what war, money, or evil were. I want to go back too. Its sad we can only dream. Thanks for bringing back the good memories. You captured emotions in words.
do any of you remember POGS??
ahh i miss those days of man hunt, POGS,
when FERBY first came out
The past is the past, you can not change it. So don't dwell in your mistakes, Pick up the pieces, and instead learn from your downfall.
Lol i remember pogs. They were those round hard papers with some image on them that ppl play. I remember ferbies too. Marbles were also famous back in the day. These are all fads. Pokemon cards too. Idk what else there is...
Pokemon cards are as hot as ever. They've been around, what? Twelve years now? Crazy. Pogs, on the other hand...I used to nanny a kid who went nuts on the Pogs. He blew SO much money on them, and he felt pretty stupid a year later, when everybody was over them!

I was in middle school then.

EDIT: sawaboof, I misread your original statement. I thought you wrote "I was never cool enough to have a fanny pack." Even so, I stand by my original statement.
I actually take great pride in never having owned a fanny pack. I never understood the appeal of the fanny pack. They were the easiest thing to steal--cut one strap and run! And when I was growing up, in the 80's, they were always neon.
Another thing I never understood--visors. They didn't keep the sun out of your eyes, you still got hat hair from them (just in a little band around your head, instead of all over), and they didn't protect you from skin cancer. But they look super cool with the fanny pack, didn't they?
What about tight rolling? Anyone old enough to remember that?

tight rolling... was that what people did right before layering 12 pairs of multi-colored socks? And then poofing your bangs and donning those hideously large sunglasses (which seem to be back "in" ::groan::)
ohhhh 80s. I sometimes do not miss you. :-P

It's a harsh reminder of all the things we shouldn't have worn. The 80's are back, baby! They're wearing skinny jeans, tunic tops (haven't seen any shirt buckles yet, though), bubble skirts, pink, teal, and yellow together, big earrings...it's frightening. Every time I volunteer, I feel like making an announcement over the PA, "Everyone report to the library and check out back issues of Seventeen immediately! It wasn't a good idea when we did it, and it isn't a good idea when you do it! Cease and desist with the skinny jeans and untied high tops!"

WHERE I AM FROM WE CALL THEM FANNY PACKS BUT THEY WERE WORN ON YOUR SHOULDERS AROUND YOUR WAIST BUT TO THE BACK. THAT IS WHERE YOU KEPT YOUR CANDY AND MONEY AND ANYTHING ELSE IMPORTANT TO A SIX YEAR OLD. lIKE COLLEGE BROS. DOES ANYONE KNO WHAT THOSE WERE?

like a messenger bag? I still think those are cool.
That's probably not what you're talking about though, but it kind of sounds like it in your description...
